Repair of roofs covered with slate - in Russia, such roofs began to enjoy popularity for a long time, without losing their relevance to this day.

Possible defects of the slate roof

Slate roofs are believed to have a long service life. However, even such roofs, over time, begin to require repair. Defects of such roofs can be caused by a variety of reasons, but repairs are indispensable in any case.

Actually, such a material is fragile, so various cracks and chips can occur even during transportation or installation. Such defects cannot be noticed immediately with the naked eye. If the slate was damaged during the installation on the roof, then such a circumstance could be caused by excessive pressure of the slate nails.

Cracks in the sheets can also be formed for the reason that previously created small holes for fastening nails and screws. According to the correct technology, before attaching the slate to the base of the roof, rather large holes should be drilled in the sheets. In this case, the diameter of such holes must be greater than the diameter of the fastener.

Sharp temperature changes can lead to cracking of the sheets. Slate absorbs moisture very well, the integrity of the sheet can be violated in the event that a negative temperature comes unexpectedly. That is why, over time, slate can lose all its waterproofing properties. If people walk on the roof, then the slate can also be covered with cracks.

The slate roof can collapse, because over time it becomes covered with lichen and moss. Therefore, it is definitely impossible to do without repairs.

How to eliminate defects in a slate roof?

The cause of defects in slate roofing is usually secondary. And the elimination of such defects is possible in just a few ways. In this case, any repair work should begin with a careful study of the entire roof surface and the condition of the rafter system.

One of the repair methods is that you will have to completely change the entire roof covering and make radical changes to the rafter system. The next way will be only a partial replacement of the slate. And the third way will be the so-called cosmetic repairs, when cracks and holes are repaired by applying patches. It should be noted that this method will extend the life of the roof, and the use of innovative waterproofing materials will add many more years to this period.

Ways to deal with cracks

If you see cracks on the roof, then they must be carefully removed from any dirt. Then a mixture is prepared, consisting of PVA glue, cement and asbestos. The mixture should become compatible with sour cream in its concentration. After that, several layers of the repair mixture are applied to those places that have been treated with a primer. The thickness of the layers must be the same. The thickness of the repair layer should be slightly more than two millimeters. Repair work should only be carried out in dry weather, while it is recommended not to do this even in very bright sun. In this case, the layer dries much faster, which contributes to a gradual build-up of strength.

Complete replacement of slate roof sheets

The most radical method will be a complete replacement of the slate. If you choose this option, then first of all it is necessary to dismantle the old sheets. In this case, remove the slate nails and all fasteners. In this case, the sheets should be lowered to the ground. Then you should study the rafter system, because a fungus can form on it or even rotting wood can begin. When examining wooden elements, you should look more closely at the rafters, because they are the main supporting structures. Actually, the entire roof depends on the degree of reliability and strength.

Elements that have undergone decay are removed and new ones are put in their place. Then the entire rafter system should be treated with special antiseptics, which will serve as reliable protection against unwanted decay processes.
