Description
In contrast to the thick woody rhizome of the Amazing Violet (lat. Viola mirabilis), the underground part of the Violet tricolor consists of a thin taproot with an unbranched network of lateral roots.
Plants of this species can be two years old, which survive the cold winter period due to the preservation of the root, while the aboveground parts die off, reviving in the spring from the buds on the roots. Botany science calls such plants "hemicryptophytes". Or they can be annual, when every spring a new plant is born from seeds that have overwintered in the soil. Such plants are called "terophytes".
A stem or several branching stems at once, which can be erect or creeping, rises from the root to the surface of the earth. The triangular stem is hollow inside, with a bare or pubescent surface, with a height of 10 to 45 centimeters.
Large petiolate leaves are arranged on the stem in the next order. The surface of the leaves is bare, or covered with scattered hairs protruding along the veins of the leaf plate. The shape of the leaves changes depending on their location on the stem. Those that are located below sit on long petioles and are broadly ovoid in shape. The petioles of the higher leaves become shorter, and the shape takes on an oblong-lanceolate appearance. Each leaf is equipped with a pair of pinnately-lyre-shaped stipules, the length of which exceeds the length of the leaf petioles.
Long peduncles with cluster inflorescences are born from the axils of the leaves. The inflorescences are formed by irregular (zygomorphic) flowers, that is, the petals of the flower are located in such a way that only one vertical plane can be drawn, in relation to which the flower will be divided into two symmetrical parts. Nature has provided each flower with two miniature bracts.
Five sepals form a protective cup for the flower corolla, which continues to hold on to the peduncle after its free five petals fall off. Flower petals are not just painted in three colors, but have a pattern similar to the muzzle of a mustachioed animal, mischievously glancing at the audience.
The pistil of the flower is surrounded by five stamens, tightly pressing against it.
The rounded capsule of the fruit is formed by three valves, which, when numerous small seeds are fully ripe, eject the contents of the fruit to freedom.
Numerous decorative varieties of Violets tricolor, bred by hardworking breeders, have absorbed a rich palette of colors, and have become regulars in city flower beds and country flower beds.
