Convolvulus is a miniature copy of a loach. It is difficult to tell the difference when looking at the inflorescences. It is not for nothing that the people call it tricolor bindweed. The main difference: the structure of the bush, low growth. What biological features are inherent in an extraordinary plant?
Biological characteristics
The flower belongs to the bindweed family. Perennial by nature, but in a zone with severe winters it is grown as an annual crop.
The height of the branchy bushes is 10-40 cm, depending on the variety. Low specimens form stable clumps, high ones have creeping shoots. Blooms profusely all summer. In place of wilted buds, new “gramophone” immediately bloom.
The bright color of the fused petals consists of 3 shades: the throat is yellow, the middle is white, the edge is multi-colored (pink, blue, lilac, blue, cream). With the advent of the sun, inflorescences with a diameter of 5 cm bloom to meet a new day. At night, "go to bed." Stay closed on cloudy days.
Seeds of large dark peas ripen in late summer. They can persist in the soil during warm winters, giving abundant self-seeding in spring.
Habitat conditions
Loves open sunny glades. In the shade, the inflorescences open for a short period of time, the plants stretch out, have a sloppy appearance. Well tolerates return spring temperature drops, autumn light frosts. It does not winter in the Middle Lane.
Clay soils with the additional introduction of rotted organic matter will please the tricolor bindweed. Grows well on alkaline soils with a sufficient amount of lime.
Drought-resistant. Watering is required only during periods of prolonged drought. Due to lack of water, it forms fewer buds, the color intensity decreases.
Reproduction
Convolvulus propagates by seeds. For early flowering, seeds are sown at home in mid-March in prepared individual cups filled with a mixture of humus, sand, peat in a ratio of 1: 1: 2.
Moisten the soil with a solution of potassium permanganate. Pits are formed with a depth of 0.8-1 cm. Place one seed in a glass. Sprinkle with earth on top, cover with foil.
The first seedlings appear in 1, 5-2 weeks. The shelter is gradually being removed. Water the seedlings 1-2 times a week. They are fed twice with a complex fertilizer for flower crops.
In mid-May, they are taken out into the open ground. They are planted in a permanent place. With seed propagation, it is difficult to guess the color of young plants. Therefore, in stores, the variety is indicated on the packs.
Experienced gardeners practice spring sowing of Convolvulus in beds for a film shelter in April. In this case, the seedlings are of better quality, hardened with compact sizes, thick shoots.
If you wish, you can save last year's bushes at home. Create acceptable wintering conditions. Cut the cuttings in March. Treat the ends of the shoots with root. Plant in fertile soil in separate cups.
During vegetative propagation, plants completely inherit all the characteristics of the parent variety, while the color of the inflorescences will remain the same.
Growing
The convolvulus is planted on the bed, dug up on the bayonet of a shovel in advance, with preliminary introduction of wood ash and humus on the surface. Wells are marked every 20-25 cm. Spill over with water. Transfer the seedlings, with a clod of earth. Sprinkle with soil, compact the near-trunk space with your hand.
Bindweed tricolor is distinguished by enviable unpretentiousness in care. In the first period of growth, weeds are weeded, then powerful shoots tightly cover the soil, leaving no chance for germination of "competitors".
Water the plants once a week in dry weather. At the beginning of flowering, they are fed with a complex fertilizer Agricola, according to the instructions. They remove dried buds, stimulating the formation of new ones.
In the middle of summer, when the first wave of flowering is over, the ends of the shoots are slightly trimmed. This technique stimulates the regrowth of dormant buds, laying more buds.
Place in the flowerbed
The Convolvulus will adorn any site. Looks beautiful both in solitary plantings and as part of complex mixborders. Planted on alpine hills, as a curb along the paths, it will create a dense carpet with multi-colored "phonographs". Will add bright colors to the flower garden.
Bushes with long shoots are suitable for container growing. Hanging pots, floor vases, will decorate the front part of the porch, a gazebo, a recreation area next to the benches. A variety of shades allow you to design complex patterns in flower beds.
Create on your site a bright splendor from the tricolor convolvulus. Surprise your guests with the unusual coloring of the undersized bushes.
