Bindweed tricolor (lat. Convolvulus tricolor) - a representative of the genus Bindweed of the Bindweed family. Found naturally in Mediterranean countries. It is actively cultivated by gardeners and florists for the purpose of decorating personal backyard plots in European countries and on the territory of the Russian Federation. Used in breeding.

Characteristic

Bindweed tricolor is represented by annual herbaceous plants, which do not exceed 50 cm in height. They are characterized by strongly branched stems at the base, crowned with basal blunt or notched foliage and stem sessile elongated foliage. The stem and foliage are completely covered with hard hairs.

The flowers are bright, solitary, formed in the axils. They are endowed with thin pedicels and lanceolate pointed bracts. The corolla of the tricolor bindweed is small, white, yellow or blue in color is inherent in it. The fruit is a multi-seeded capsule bearing lumpy seeds. The seeds, in turn, remain viable for two years.

The flowering of the species under consideration is observed in July - August; in warm regions, flowering persists until the third decade of September. A feature of the plant is the closure of flowers at night and cloudy weather.

Today tricolor bindweed is involved in breeding work. Several flowering ornamental varieties have already been obtained. For example, the Blue Enchantment variety is famous for its indigo-colored flowers. Crimson Monarch is the exact opposite. It has attractive crimson flowers.

It should be noted the variety Royal Enzin (White Ensign). It forms fairly large white flowers with a bright yellow center. This variety is especially in harmony with the Blue Enzine variety. It boasts high growth and a bright blue corolla with a white center.

Growing features

Bindweed tricolor is quite picky about growing conditions. It is recommended to plant it in areas with rich in minerals, loamy or sandy loam soil. The plant does not tolerate strongly acidic soils, the optimal pH level is 7, 0. Tricolor bindweed is a warm and light-loving crop. It feels best in sunny areas with diffused light. An openwork shadow is not forbidden.

It should be noted that tricolor bindweed, like all its closest "relatives", is prone to self-seeding. New sprouts hatch next spring, they must be thinned out, otherwise abundant flowering cannot be achieved. The optimum distance between plants is 30 cm.

By the way, the seed method of reproduction is the most common. It is recommended to sow seeds in seedling boxes in the third decade of March - the first decade of April under glass or foil with constant airing and watering. Since the seeds are small, they do not need to be deeply buried. It is enough to lightly press them into the soil, and then spray intensively from a spray bottle. As a rule, seedlings appear together in 1-2 weeks.

Subtleties of care

The tricolor bindweed does not require any special care manipulations. It is enough to regularly water and apply mineral complex fertilizers every three weeks. Removal of faded inflorescences is encouraged. This procedure prolongs flowering and maintains a highly decorative look.
