Salvinia eared (lat. Salvinia natans) - an aquatic plant from the Salviniaceae family. It owes its interesting name to the fact that the shape of the leaves of eared salvinia is very similar to ears.
Description
Salvinia eared is an aquatic plant with short branching and poorly developed stems and whorled leaves (in each whorl you can find three funny leaves). Both floating leaves of this beautiful aquatic perennial can be either oblong or rounded. They are located opposite each other, covered with short hairs, characterized by the presence of two bulges on each and touching the water surface only with edges and midribs. And the third leaf, which outwardly resembles a root, is lowered down and is threadlikely dissected. By the way, it is on it that the formation of sporulation organs occurs, and the length of floating leaf blades often reaches three and a half centimeters. As for the color of the leaves, it can vary from bluish-greenish tones to light green shades.
The underwater leaves of this aquatic beauty reliably protect all aquarium inhabitants from bright light and are a favorite spawning place for some species of fish. They also serve as an excellent refuge for fry. In short, salvinia eared is ideal for shading aquariums.
Where grows
In nature, eared salvinia can most often be seen in the stagnant water of bays, lakes and river branches. The main place of its growth is the tropical regions of Central and South America.
Growing and caring
Best of all, salvinia eared will feel in tropical or moderately warm aquariums, the average volume of which is twenty liters. By the way, this colorful fern will grow well in the open air during the summer. With regard to water requirements, the best temperature for growing salvinia eared will be in the range from twenty to twenty-five degrees. In this case, the hardness of the water should not exceed fifteen degrees, and the pH should be in the range from six to eight degrees. Periodically, the water must be filtered and one quarter of its total volume must be replaced weekly.
Eared Salvinia is a big lover of bright lighting, so it doesn't hurt to purchase additional sources of artificial lighting for her (fluorescent lamps or special phytolamps are best suited for this, the power of which should be at least 3 W for each square decimeter of the water surface). But it is categorically not recommended to use powerful incandescent lamps - they are endowed with the ability to dry out the air quite strongly. The length of daylight hours for this water beauty should be at least twelve hours. And in order for it to be preserved as best as possible in the winter season, it does not hurt to increase the duration of its daylight hours.
It should be noted that this marvelous fern absolutely does not tolerate droplets of water falling from above - that is why all cover glasses must be positioned obliquely so that every single droplet can drain freely to their edges.
Eared salvinia reproduces mainly by separating lateral shoots, which form in huge quantities on the mother bushes. By the way, in nature, young plants are easily formed even from tiny fragments of stems. This green pet reproduces quite well with the help of spores (this process is especially impressive in the spring-summer period).
The eared salvinia does not need any fertilizers and fertilizing at all - it independently extracts all the useful compounds it requires. And in general, it is also very unpretentious. True, if the water temperature is significantly lower than the recommended one, or if the eared salvinia experiences a lack of light, then it can quickly die.

Salvinia
Salvinia is one of the rather few ferns that can live in the water. It is noteworthy that today this plant is considered very rare, for this reason, most often salvinia is grown specifically to be placed later in an aquarium. It is worth noting that outwardly, this plant very little resembles those ferns that can be found in the forest.

Salvinia - Floating Fern
Salvinia is a rather interesting fern that lives in water. However, there is no external resemblance to the ferns growing in the forest in Salvinia. It got its name in honor of the Italian scientist of the 17th century - Anton Maria Salvini. You can meet this peculiar plant only in reservoirs with slowly flowing or stagnant water. It is quite rare, and therefore it is specially grown in order to then be placed in aquariums
