Salvinia eared in nature grows mainly in stagnant water of lakes, bays, as well as river branches in tropical regions of South and Central America. This amazingly beautiful fern floats freely on the water surface. Often, salvinia eared is grown in aquariums - under favorable conditions, it can grow in them throughout the year. And it is called eared because the shape of its leaves is very similar to ears
Getting to know the plant
Salvinia eared is endowed with a short branching stem, which is rather poorly developed, and its leaves are whorled - each whorl contains three leaves. The shape of the two floating leaves of this aquatic perennial can be either oblong or round. These leaves with two bulges are located opposite each other, covered with short hairs and touch the water surface only with middle veins and edges. As for the third leaf, in its appearance it somewhat resembles a root, since it is threadlikely dissected and lowered down. It is this leaflet that forms the sporulation organs. The length of floating leaf blades often reaches three and a half centimeters. And regarding the color of the leaves of this water beauty, we can say that it varies from bluish-greenish shades to light green tones.
The underwater leaves of the eared salvinia grown in aquariums protect its inhabitants from bright light, and also serve as a spawning place for some fish and a refuge for fry. This plant will be very suitable for shading any part of the aquarium.
How to grow
Salvinia eared is recommended to be kept in tropical or moderately warm aquariums. On average, their volume should be 20 liters. And in summer, this floating fern can be grown even in the open air. With regard to water parameters, the best solution would be water with a temperature of 20 to 25 degrees, with a pH in the range of 6 - 8 and hardness up to fifteen degrees. The water should be systematically filtered, and a quarter of its total volume should be replaced weekly.
Lighting for this aquatic inhabitant needs bright. It is permissible to use special phytolamps or fluorescent lamps as the main sources of artificial lighting. For each square decimeter of water surface, their power must be at least 3 watts. It is highly undesirable to use incandescent lamps of rather high power - they have the property of very draining the air. The duration of daylight hours for a wonderful water fern should be at least twelve hours. And in winter, for better preservation, it is necessary to increase the duration of artificial lighting for a longer time.
Since salvinia eared very much does not like droplets of water falling from above, cover glasses in aquariums should be positioned obliquely so that all droplets have the opportunity to drain to their edges.
Reproduction of this luxurious plant occurs mainly through the separation of lateral shoots. Such shoots are formed on mother bushes in huge quantities. Even from tiny fragments of stalks in nature, young plants are formed quite quickly. In addition, this beauty reproduces well with numerous disputes. Its reproduction occurs especially rapidly in the spring and summer.
As for fertilizers and all kinds of dressings, Eared Salvinia does not need them at all, since it is able to independently extract all the nutrients it needs. And in general, this wonderful plant is very unpretentious, it is only important to take into account the fact that at a water temperature much lower than the recommended one, as well as with a lack of light, salvinia eared can die quickly enough.
