Manchurian walnut (lat. Juglans mandshurica) - a representative of the Walnut genus of the Walnut family. Another name is Dumbey Walnut. It is found naturally in North China, Korea, the Far East, Sakhalin and North America. Typical habitats are cedar-deciduous forests, river valleys and the lower mountain belt. The average age is 250 years.
Characteristics of culture
Manchurian walnut is a deciduous monoecious shrub or tree up to 30 m high with a wide-rounded or spreading crown and an even trunk with a dark gray bark. Shoots pubescent, yellowish-brown. Leaves are compound, petiolate, pinnate, up to 90 cm long, consist of 1-29 oblong-elliptical leaflets. The edges of the leaves are serrate, the leaf blade is serrated or finely toothed, pointed to the tip.
Flowers are heterosexual, small, inconspicuous. Female flowers are equipped with bright pink stigmas, 3-10 pieces sit on short pedicels. Male flowers are collected in long earrings. Manchurian walnut blooms in April-May (flowering time depends on the climatic zone).
The fruit is drupe, oval, similar to a walnut, has a thick green or brownish shell. The nut kernel is edible, contains up to 56% fatty oil. The fruits ripen in September-November. The culture enters fruiting in 4-8 years after planting. Manchurian walnut bears fruit annually, the average yield of an adult tree is 10-30 kg. The root system of plants is powerful; as it grows, it extends far beyond the crown. That is why plants have a negative attitude towards transplanting, this also applies to large-sized seedlings.
Growing conditions
Manchurian walnut photophilous, develops best in sunny areas. Light shade will not harm the plants. The culture is undemanding to soil conditions, but it gives good yields only on deep, drained, fertile, drained, humus-rich soils. A temporary lack of moisture is easily tolerated by plants, since they have a deep root system. Accepts short-term flooding. Heavy, clayey, waterlogged and dry soils are undesirable for Manchurian walnut.
Planting seedlings
Before planting, seedlings need preliminary preparation. To do this, the taproot is cut off from the seedlings, leaving 30-40 cm. This procedure contributes to the formation of additional lateral roots. Trimming is carried out using a special staple. When planting a culture with nuts, instead of further cutting the root, pinching is carried out. The planting hole is prepared in 2-3 weeks, at its bottom an earthen roller is formed, the mixture for which is made up of the top layer of soil, humus and sand with the addition of mineral fertilizers.
Seed propagation
Sowing of seeds of Manchurian walnut is carried out in the fall. Before sowing, seeds are sprayed with kerasin to prevent mice and other rodents from eating them. Spring sowing is not prohibited, but stratification is required in this case. It should be noted that seed germination with spring sowing is much lower than with autumn sowing. The embedment depth is 6-8 cm. The nut is placed in the hole with an edge. Up to 15 nuts are sown per 1 square meter.
Application
In the Russian Federation, Manchurian walnut is used for landscaping parks and alleys. On personal backyard plots, plants are also a frequent guest. Kernels are used for food purposes, including for obtaining high-quality oil used in the confectionery industry. Manchurian walnut wood is a particularly valuable material; furniture, plywood and various handicrafts are made from it.
