Petunias - a living decoration of the garden

Petunia is a flower of the nightshade family, native to South America. Quite simply - a relative of the potato, tomato and eggplant. Genus - petun (tobacco translated from Portuguese). It has been used as a decorative flower in the decoration of gardens and flower beds since the 18th century. According to the shape of the flowers, petunia is divided into 4 main types: simple, small-flowered, large-flowered and terry. The stem is erect, creeping and hanging down. It is these features that are taken into account when choosing a place for planting a plant

Petunia conquers with its variety of colors and shapes. This flower can be the main character in the composition, or a subtle nuance that emphasizes the general mood. Being unpretentious to watering and lighting, it is planted both in open ground in the sun, and in pots on the summer terrace. For a composition, petunias of the same color are rarely chosen, on the contrary, it is more interesting that one color would be replaced by another. So where do you start when choosing varieties?

Shoot height

Petunia is easily damaged by wind and rain, and the higher the shoot, the more it is exposed to the environment. Standing varieties with a high stem are best planted in secluded places, and even better in portable pots to hide from gusty winds and heavy rains. Low-growing varieties are ideal for planting in front gardens and for creating a carpet effect.

Bush volume

For hanging pots, only volumetric varieties are used. Since hanging pots are susceptible to wind, wilting of leaves, flowers and branches entirely - it is likely that with large volumes this is not so noticeable and is compensated by other branches. It should also be remembered that a lot of free space and light is required for a beautiful and lush growth, which means that a dense planting does not guarantee a fluffy bush.

Flower size

The petunia flower is very delicate and spots quickly appear on it, or the flower withers at the slightest touch. Large-flowered and terry petunias are planted under cover. Either it will be the corner of the gazebo, or at the foot of larger and stronger plants (such as a rose bush, boxwood bush). Small flowers, on the other hand, will hide all the minor flaws and shortcomings in their quantity, and therefore, even close, they will look great under the most unfavorable conditions.

Popular types of planting petunias

Carpet landing made possible by the huge number of petunia varieties. For this method, the prepared soil is divided into sectors according to the pattern and the plants are planted according to colors. Thus, the lawn turns into a blooming carpet full of scents.

Disguise with flowers. If there is a boulder, an earthen embankment or a large stump on the site that cannot be removed, then the petunias planted there (in pots or in formed holes) will decorate this lifeless space, create the look "That's right," instead of "He's so in the way here."

Stepped disembarkation a little more complicated and requires a lot of effort and time. On the allotted area, boards are made of any available material (curbs, fragments of slate or tiles, stones, boards), the formed "pool" is covered with earth, raising it above the general level, and an even smaller "pool" is laid out next. Such a pyramid can consist of as many tiers as space and fantasy allow. Ampel petunias are planted in the formed beds, later they will cascade down the steps.

Vertical flower bed is a way to grow flowers even in the stone jungle. Without a meter of land, you can create a blooming flower bed. To do this, a base (pillar, cone, etc.) is formed from the mesh, agrotextile is laid inside, and the earth is filled up. Agrotextiles are cut in the holes of the mesh with a cross, and seedlings are planted there. Watering is done through the top. Soon, the base is hidden under the flowers, turning into a pillar of petunias.

Flight of fantasy lovers of petunias are so great that it is difficult to list even the most common options for non-standard items used for flower beds. Boots nailed to a fence can be a very original planter. A cart with earth, standing at an angle, as if sprinkling flowers, a barrel or a bucket, from which flowers sprouted "by chance". If you put the old chest of drawers in the middle of the front garden, open the cabinets with a ladder, cover them with earth and plant the petunias there … There are countless options, and they can only be limited by imagination, which is limitless!
