These small flowers are still a rare guest in our gardens. Born in warm Mexico, they cannot stand low temperatures. In a warm sunny summer, they grow rapidly, creating a continuous carpet covering the ground with bright numerous inflorescences-baskets. Can be grown as an ampelous plant
Rod Sanvitalia
The genus Sanvitalia is not rich in species. Like the seven wonders of the world, it has 7 species of herbaceous plants, which can be perennial and annual. In culture, only one species is grown - open sanitation. It is grown as an annual in the open field, or in pots, as an ampelous plant.
Sanvitalia prostrate
Sanvitalia procumbens is a low-growing creeping plant up to 15 centimeters high. It is grown as an annual.
In the literature, some position the plant as resistant to high and low temperatures. But people who were engaged in the cultivation of sanitation in central Russia write that the plant does not withstand spring frosts, dying at temperatures below plus 5 degrees.
All aboveground parts of the plant are miniature natural masterpieces. Small ovoid leaves cover the creeping shoots. The inflorescences-baskets that bloom throughout the summer do not exceed 3 centimeters in diameter. Their small size is more than compensated for by the abundance and grace of inflorescences. The inflorescences have a dark purple or brown center of tubular flowers, which are surrounded by yellow ligulate marginal flowers, usually called petals. The inflorescences are similar to miniature zinnias or miniature sunflowers.
Varieties with double flowers, as well as ground cover varieties, have been bred.
Growing
The Mexican loves sunny places where she blooms profusely and brightly.
They prefer fertile, light soil. When planting, organic fertilizer is added, feeding in the spring with mineral fertilizer once every three weeks.
For plants grown in pots, a mixture of fertile soil with peat in equal proportions will be a good soil.
Watering should be regular, but not allowing water stagnation, which many plants cannot tolerate.
Reproduction
Propagated by sowing seeds for seedlings in early spring. Seedlings dive. They are planted in open ground when return spring frosts are no longer expected. The plant transfers a transplant easily, quickly settling in a new place.
When buying seeds, pay attention to the expiration date, since the seeds lose their germination after two to three years.
Sometimes you can find Sanvitalia on sale in hanging pots. Choose compact and well-formed specimens.
Usage
Sanvitalia is grown in pots, decorating balconies and terraces. Sometimes the pots are hung, growing it as an ampelous plant.
Outdoors, it is an excellent ground cover plant that very quickly covers open areas of land with an elegant carpet of green leaves and sunny miniature buds.
In addition, Sanvitalia is suitable for rock gardens, for arranging borders. In flower beds, it can be combined with salvia, cinquefoil, brachicoma, gatsania and its tall twin, zinnia.
Diseases and pests
In cold climates and with excess moisture, it can be attacked by fungi that damage the roots of the plant.

Dry Rot Of Sunflower Baskets
Dry rot of sunflower baskets is found in almost all regions where this crop is grown. This attack is especially harmful in years with hot and dry summers. Dry rot appears, as a rule, after flowering, when the seeds begin to fill and ripen. And its harmfulness lies mainly in the deterioration of the marketable and sowing properties of seeds - their fatty acid composition is noticeably deteriorating, and there is also a significant decrease in oil content. All the seeds are stowed
