Aponogeton Bernier is a native of the reservoirs of Eastern Madagascar. Most often it can be found in rivers and streams with a fairly fast current. This aquatic beauty is also capable of dwelling in elevated areas, however, their height in this case should not exceed 1200 meters above sea level. Both shady and sunny areas are equally suitable for its development. But in aquariums, growing Bernier's aponogeton is quite problematic, but with due diligence, you can cope with this task
Getting to know the plant
Bernier's aponogeton is endowed with thick bushy rhizomes and nodules, the thickness of which does not exceed three centimeters. The length of its petioles often reaches thirteen centimeters. Leaf blades grow in length up to one hundred and twenty centimeters, and their width usually does not exceed ten centimeters. The leaves curved and wavy at the edges have a ribbon-like shape and are painted in rich green shades. Sometimes they are slightly wrinkled, and also slightly taper towards the tops and at the bases.
The flower stalks of the Bernier aponogeton can grow up to seventy-five centimeters in length. They are rigid, rigid and usually not tapering under the inflorescences. In addition, all flower stalks are equipped with falling cover leaves, the length of which reaches fifteen millimeters.
Each inflorescence of this aquatic beauty is formed by rather amusing spikelets in the amount of three to fifteen pieces. And the length of the inflorescences is on average about eight centimeters. The flowers of the Bernier aponogeton are very small and are usually painted white, although sometimes they can also have a slight pale pink tint. Each flower contains six stamens and three to four pistils (four pistils are much less common). This aquatic inhabitant can bloom throughout the year.
Bernier's aponogeton fruits are quite funny - they have short beaks at their tips. And the seeds of this handsome man, equipped with a simple peel, reach 7x4 mm in size.
There are two whole forms of Bernier aponogetone - with narrow and with wide leaf blades.
How to grow
Due to the fact that the care of Bernier's aponogeton is very difficult, it is possible to grow it safely in aquariums only in isolated cases. The fact is that this green pet for its successful cultivation requires the creation of conditions as similar as possible to its natural habitat. The water must be soft, with strong circulation and relatively low temperature.
In aquariums where it is planned to grow Bernier aponogeton, the water hardness should be no more than five degrees. And in natural reservoirs where this aquatic inhabitant is found, water hardness is most often in the range of 1 - 1, 5 degrees. As for the optimal water temperature, it will be best if it is about twenty-five to twenty-six degrees. And the aquarium soil should consist of gravel or gneiss.
Since Bernier's aponogeton needs aerated water, the aquarium should be refilled periodically with clean water taken from any running water. An excellent solution would be snow or rain water, well settled and carefully blown with air.
In pumped aquariums, the Bernier aponogeton grows best, since the pump ensures constant mixing of water layers with different oxygen saturations. Also, this beautiful aquatic man must always try to keep it clean, with special care protecting it from destructive algae.
Typically, aquarists propagate the Bernier aponogeton using seeds. This green pet will look especially good in aquariums if they contain other plants with a mesh structure of leaves.
