Hydrilla whorled grows in the slow flowing and stagnant waters of Australia, Asia, North America and Africa, as well as northern Europe. This plant is ideal for beginner hobbyists as it does not require a lot of effort to grow and care for. Moreover, in aquariums, it can grow throughout the year. Hydrilla whorled will grow well in garden decorative ponds, however, in them this plant is grown, as a rule, only in the summer. And in the autumn-winter period, it dies off. However, the roots of the hydrilla verticulata continue to live on and, with the onset of warmth, they again give young plants
Getting to know the plant
Hydrilla whorled grows under water and is endowed with upright branching elongated stems, the thickness of which reaches two millimeters and the length is two meters. However, stalks of this length are found only in natural conditions, and in aquariums their height often does not exceed forty centimeters.
The sedentary leaves of this beauty are whorled - each whorl contains from three to eight leaves. Leaf blades with jagged edges are colored in various shades of green, and their main veins are often reddish. The tops of the leaves can be either sharp or rounded. Their width is up to three millimeters, and their length can reach two and a half centimeters.
Under particularly good conditions, hydrilla whorled in summer can even bloom. This usually happens in July, but it is extremely rare to observe the flowering of this unusual aquatic inhabitant. Hydrilla whorled flowers are dioecious, solitary and rather small. Their cups are formed by three greenish-brown leaves. The pistillate flowers of this plant are whitish-filmy, and the staminate ones are greenish-white. And the fruits of hydrilla whorled are berry-shaped.
How to grow
Hydrilla whorled, when grown correctly, can form luxurious lush thickets. Under proper conditions, this aquatic beauty grows in length by about 5 cm in a week. Most often, it is planted along the aquarium walls in dense bunches, in the middle or in the background. Equally well hydrilla whorled is used both as a rooted in the ground and as a floating plant. The best temperature range for it is from 18 to 27 degrees.
It is recommended to place pieces of blue clay (previously dried) under the roots of this bushy plant when placing it in the aquarium. It will not be difficult to get it at the pharmacy.
Lighting for the full development of whorled hydrilla must be intense. The optimal daylight hours are at least twelve hours. And the active reaction and water hardness do not play a special role in the cultivation of this plant. This beauty even loves hard water. The best parameters are considered to be hardness from two to twelve degrees, and pH acidity in the range from 6.5 to 7.5.
Hydrilla whorled is absolutely undemanding in leaving. However, when caring for her, as well as when moving her, you must be extremely careful, since this beauty is rather fragile. Also, periodically whorled hydrilla should be thinned out. It is not forbidden to add various liquid fertilizers to water, although this is completely optional. Hydrilla whorled can grow normally only in clean water, therefore, the water intended for its cultivation must be filtered.
As for reproduction, this aquatic inhabitant under artificial conditions reproduces mainly vegetatively, that is, by dividing the stems and lateral layers. And if you cut off the top of this beauty, then it will begin to bush.
It is also noteworthy that whorled hydrilla, in addition to decorating ponds, is also an excellent natural substrate for spawning aquariums.
