Hydrilla whorled is a plant growing under water, endowed with branching erect elongated stems, reaching about two millimeters in thickness and about two meters in length. True, the stalks of the above length can be found only in natural conditions, in aquariums their height almost never exceeds forty centimeters.
The sessile leaves of hydrilla verticulata are arranged whorled - each whorl includes from three to eight leaves. The leaf blades equipped with jagged edges are painted in a wide variety of green shades, and their main veins are often reddish. As for the tops of the leaves, they can be either sharp or slightly rounded. Their width is up to 3 mm, and their length is up to 2.5 cm.
If hydrilla whorled will grow in very good conditions, then in the summer season it can even please with its flowering. The dioecious flowers of hydrilla whorled are always solitary and rather small, and their cups are formed by three leaves of greenish-brownish shades. The pistillate flowers of this aquatic inhabitant are whitish-filmy, and the staminate flowers are greenish-white. And the fruits of hydrilla verticulata are distinguished by a characteristic berry-like shape.
Where grows
Most often, this plant can be seen in the slowly flowing and stagnant waters of Australia, Asia and North America, as well as northern Europe and Africa.
Usage
Hydrilla whorled is an ideal choice for novice aquarists, as it does not require huge efforts to grow and care at all. In addition, it grows well in aquariums throughout the year.
No worse than hydrilla whorled grows in garden decorative ponds, however, it is advisable to grow it in them only in the summer season - in the autumn-winter period it will simply die out. But the roots of the unusual water beauty will continue to live further, and with the onset of spring they will again give young plants.
In aquariums, hydrilla whorled is planted mainly in dense bunches along the walls, in the middle or in the background.
Growing and caring
If properly grown this aquatic beauty, then it will form magnificent lush thickets - under proper conditions of keeping the hydrill, the whorled can grow about five centimeters in length in a week. By the way, this green pet grows equally well both as a plant rooted in the ground and as a floating one. And the best temperature for growing it will be the range from eighteen to twenty-seven degrees.
Placing this bushy plant in the aquarium, it does not hurt to place pieces of pre-dried blue clay under its roots. By the way, such clay can be easily bought at an ordinary pharmacy.
For the full development of hydrilla verticulata, intense lighting is required, and the minimum duration of its daylight hours should be twelve hours. As for the active reaction and water hardness, they do not play a special role in this case. And this pretty plant is not even indifferent to hard water. The most optimal parameters for its development are considered to be hardness in the range from two to twelve degrees and acidity in the range from 6, 5 to 7, 5.
In care, this plant is completely undemanding, however, when caring for it and when moving it, it does not hurt to be careful, since it is quite fragile. From time to time, hydrilla whorled needs to be thinned out. It is not forbidden to pamper her by adding liquid fertilizers to the water. And this aquatic beauty reproduces mainly by vegetative means.
