Fresh news from scientists in the UK informed the world that a new protector of the human cardiovascular system from atherosclerosis has been found. This is a member of the Cabbage family with the name "Broccoli". Our gardeners still have time to grow a new panacea for the disease in their summer cottage this summer, protecting themselves and their loved ones from the formation of atheromatous plaques in the blood vessels

Cabbage family

All plants of the Cabbage family are distinguished by rich reserves of substances useful for the human body. The queen of the family is white cabbage, which is good in any form. It is believed that in sauerkraut not only all the healing properties of the plant are preserved, but they even grow. Therefore, white cabbage is a welcome guest on our table all year round.

Broccoli cabbage is less familiar to us. This is not surprising, because her march across our land began not so long ago.

Health benefits of broccoli

However, the list of useful properties of broccoli is attracting more and more attention.

She has an enviable list of vitamins: C, E, PP, K and beta-carotene. Moreover, the content of vitamin C is 2.5 times higher than that of cabbage we are used to. In terms of the composition of minerals, broccoli does not lag behind its relative, cauliflower, having a high content of magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, potassium. Such a composition turns broccoli into a product that is indispensable for vitamin deficiency, recovery after severe illness, and for improving vision.

But broccoli's trump card is the substance glucoraphanin, which lowers the level of "bad" cholesterol in the blood. In the UK, varieties have been developed in which glucoraphanin is three times more than in conventional varieties. By the way, this substance is found in cauliflower, turnips, watercress and kohlrabi.

Differences between broccoli and cauliflower

These two types of cabbage are similar in that it is not their leaves that are eaten, but the unfilled flowers. Although their leaves are quite edible. Broccoli flower heads can be green or blue, in contrast to light-colored cauliflower heads.

Broccoli eats flower heads and thick purple or green stalks, including the underside of the shoots, which is usually discarded in cauliflower. The protein content of broccoli heads is 1.5 times that of cauliflower heads. Broccoli is eaten boiled and fried in oil, pickled and added to salads.

Growing

Broccoli can be grown through seedlings by planting it outdoors 50-55 days after germination. That is, there is still time for sowing. And you can sow directly into open ground in May, if you can protect the seedlings from the cruciferous flea. To protect against fleas, seedlings should be pollinated with tobacco dust or wood ash every 2-3 days.

It is better to choose a place for broccoli in partial shade. The soil needs fertile. The distance between the seedlings is left equal to 25-30 cm.

Watering during the growing season should be regular, since the lack of moisture significantly reduces the yield and leads to rapid scattering of the heads. In addition, fertilizing with nitrogen fertilizers is needed.

The heads are removed selectively, preventing the blooming of flowers. Otherwise, they will become inedible. After cleaning the heads, the weak stepsons are cut out, leaving a couple of the strong ones. The cabbage is fertilized with ammonium nitrate at the rate of 30-40 grams per square meter of the garden bed and continue to water the plant. Then, in the fall, you can get another crop of broccoli.

Broccoli is a frost-resistant culture. Light autumn frosts do not scare her, and therefore you can strengthen your blood vessels by eating delicious heads of fresh cabbage from your garden until mid, or even until the end of October.
