Barberry as a garden decoration

Many landscape designers consider barberry to be the main element of garden decoration. This plant includes numerous varieties and species, allowing you to choose such specimens that will help turn even the most boring site into an amazing place with beautiful shades and magical outlines

Barberries can be of different colors from green to yellow and burgundy. They also differ in size. Thus, you can make interesting and creative compositions right at your dacha. Even in the zoning and decoration of city parks, embankments, alleys, such a plant is very common.

Especially noteworthy are barberry bushes with foliage painted in several colors. This is a very beautiful sight! In a group planting, the effect of the general appearance of such trees is truly amazing. However, they are often planted singly. It is noteworthy that you can mix them with absolutely any crops and trees. Low-growing shrubs can come in handy in case of planting in mixborders. Quite miniature varieties will be an excellent option for border-type plantings. Elegant berries in harmony with attractive leaves can transform the site beyond recognition.

How to grow barberry on the site?

It is actually not very difficult to grow a barberry culture in a summer cottage. It has many positive properties that provide relief from many of the hassle and care requirements. But the attractiveness and aesthetic qualities of the shrub will delight the owner of the site for a long time.

Barberry is picky about the type and composition of the soil on which it grows. Different varieties prefer different locations for growing sites in the garden: some are ready to thrive in shaded areas, while others need exclusively sunny areas.

A gardener who decides to grow barberry should know that the plant does not tolerate stagnant moisture in the soil. The shrub feels much more comfortable in arid places. For a quick engraftment and development of barberry, you need to take care of preliminary preparatory procedures. For example, a shrub will grow much faster and better if you dig a hole before planting it, which will be three or four times the size of the crop root. As a rule, indicators of depth, width and length are half a meter.

Also, a bucket of water should be poured into the prepared sowing hole. All moisture must completely saturate the soil. The gardener then needs to create effective drainage. For these purposes, you will need crushed stone, large pebbles and sand. All components are stacked in layers: crushed stone - fifteen, pebbles - twenty, and sand - twenty-five centimeters. The space that will eventually remain must be filled with soil. Peat and humus must be added here immediately. It is advisable to add a glass of wood ash, three tablespoons of lime, fifty grams of superphosphate and twenty grams of potassium-based salt to this soil mixture. The quantity is calculated for a bucket of soil mixture. Nitrofosk or kemira is also suitable for these purposes.

How to plant a barberry?

The best time to plant barberry is in the spring. As a result, over the summer, the miniature plant has time to strengthen and develop its roots. Also, barberry gets used to new conditions and a prepared place. In the south, barberry can be planted in the fall. The landing pattern itself can be different.

For example, a shrub can be planted in a hole as a single specimen. There is also the possibility of group planting of trees in a row. But here it is important to keep the distance between them at twenty centimeters. It is necessary for a green hedge. The seedling itself must be placed so that the root collar in the middle of the hole is located slightly below the ground level (four centimeters).

To the soil level, you need to fill the hole with a special mixture. The root collar has renewable buds. If the top of the plant freezes, new plants will form from these buds. The finished seedling should be immediately watered with half a bucket of water. You should also mulch with leaves or sawdust. Any other small mulch will do as well.

Caring for barberry is easy. It is enough to carry out the simplest and most necessary procedures in a timely manner and with high quality. In the second year after planting, the shrub should be fed. For one bush, it is necessary to make thirty grams of urea diluted in water. Further, every year, feeding is performed in the spring season, even before the buds bloom. For these purposes, preference should be given to kemira, nitrophoske or nitroammofosk. Although other similar substances can be selected. This fertilizer is applied along with the irrigation operation or as a solution. Mature shrubs only need to be fertilized every three years.
