A luxurious rose garden in the garden is the dream of many flower growers. And in the fall, there is an opportunity to make your dream come true if you buy rose seedlings in time and plant them in your flower beds according to all the rules, so that next year they will please the owners with the regal appearance of their delightful flowers. What do you need to know when choosing seedlings and when preparing them for planting, as well as how exactly to plant seedlings?
How to choose rose seedlings
A wide variety of seedlings are sold in markets and fairs - with open and closed root systems, with cut stems, and even with flowers and buds. Where should you choose?
Saplings with an open root system are good because you can assess the condition of the root system on the spot. At the same time, such seedlings take root a little worse, because their roots are often overdried.
Seedlings with a closed root system do not have this problem. However, in this case, you will have to rely on the seller's conscience - he carefully tucked the roots up or mercilessly cut them off so that they do not interfere with the packaging of the plant.
Seedlings can be sold already prepared for planting, with short cut off shoots. It is enough for each to have 3-4 kidneys. But if the bush is uncut, it doesn't matter either. You can easily do it yourself. The main thing is to have a pruner at home. And the cut off parts can be used as cuttings for propagation.
It is more important to pay attention to the thickness of the stem. It should be approximately 0.8-1 cm in diameter.
Preparing a seedling for planting
Before immersing the seedlings in the planting hole, they need to be prepared in a special way. Namely - soak the roots in a bucket of water. For seedlings with an open root system, this is useful in order to restore them after a dry state.
And those that were tightly packed in a film along with an earthen lump should straighten in the water, because the lateral roots could be bent up, and it is undesirable to plant in this position. At the same time, it is useful to add a root formation stimulant to the water.
After that, the roots must be pruned. First of all, rotten and broken parts are removed. Then too long lateral roots are removed. And last of all, all other roots are slightly shortened until a white core appears. This will heal the root system and at the same time stimulate the formation of lateral and lobules of overgrown roots.
Landing pit device
For a rose, they dig planting holes with a volume of about two buckets. The depth should be such that the seedling can be buried in the ground below the root collar. Only the ends of the cut stems should come out to the surface of the earth.
If you make the planting shallower, so that the grafting site and the root collar peep out above the soil surface, then the stems can freeze in winter, and the more frost-resistant wild rose hips, on the root of which a rose is usually grafted, will grow. And instead of a rose garden, rose hips will settle in your garden. This is also beautiful, but not quite what the grower expects when planting rose seedlings.
When planting the roots of the rose, it is advisable to cover it not with the earth that has just been dug, but with a loose nutrient mixture. A mixture of humus and peat is perfect for these purposes. It is also recommended to add about a glass of wood ash to it in a bucket of mixture. Instead of humus with peat, you can also use rotten compost or rotted manure, which is at least three years old. From fertilizers, you can use superphosphate, potash fertilizer.
Having covered the seedling with soil halfway, you need to water the plant abundantly. To do this, take at least 5 liters of water. And then add the nutrient mixture on top. And pour water again so that the earth envelops the roots. At the same time, control the level of deepening of the root collar. She should hide 3-4 centimeters underground.
