The Latin name of the perennial herb "Hemerocallis" in translation sounds like "beautiful day." This name was not given by chance, because the flowers of most daylily species delight with their bright outfit for only one day. This is compensated by the opening of new flowers, increasing the flowering period of the entire bush to a month. Due to its unpretentiousness to living conditions and a variety of flower colors, the daylily is popular with gardeners

Description

The daylily owes its unpretentiousness in part to thickened, cord-like, fleshy roots, which help, for example, to survive a period of drought due to the moisture stored in the roots.

The flower stalks of the daylily rise above the surface of the flower garden to a height of 50 to 100 centimeters and are surrounded by broad-linear two-row leaves. Funnel-shaped large flowers have sixteen basic colors, plus a huge number of mixed complex tones.

Popular types of daylily

• Daylily Dumortier (wolf locust) - with yellow flowers up to 5, 5 centimeters in diameter. Peduncles are equal in height to leaves, or slightly higher. Flowering from mid-May. Grows in the Far East.

• Daylily yellow - with bright yellow fragrant flowers up to 9 centimeters in diameter. Blooms for about a month from the end of May. Its dense bush grows equally well in dry and wet places.

• Daylily lemon yellow - with lemon yellow fragrant flowers. Blooms from July to August. A powerful bush of a cascade of dangling, shiny dark green leaves. It is considered the most original daylily.

• Daylily of Middendorf - with yellow-orange fragrant flowers up to 9 centimeters in diameter. It blooms for three weeks from mid to late May. In the fall, it can sometimes repeat flowering. Unpretentious to soil.

• Small daylily (small wolf locust) - with light yellow fragrant flowers up to 5 centimeters in diameter. Blooms for a month from the end of May. A dense compact bush with narrow drooping leaves. Unpretentious to soil.

• Daylily orange - with orange-yellow large flowers without aroma, up to 12 centimeters in diameter, blooming in the middle of the summer season. Strong peduncles above the leaves. Less cold-resistant.

• Red daylily - with reddish-red, odorless flowers up to 10 centimeters in diameter. Blooms profusely for 1, 5 months in June-July. A powerful bush rises to a height of 1 meter. Prefers damp swampy places.

Growing

Daylilies are very unpretentious plants. As a rule, they are undemanding to the composition of the soil, climatic conditions, location, easy to care for, resistant to diseases and pests.

They grow well in shade and partial shade, but in sunny places they give more beautiful and larger flowers. Although they are not picky about soils, still, acidic soils are less suitable for them. And daylilies do not like the close occurrence of groundwater.

But even the most unpretentious plants always respond with gratitude for good care.

Reproduction

The easiest way to reproduce daylilies is to divide the bush, which can be carried out both in spring and autumn, at least once every 5-7 years. It should be remembered that the plant takes a month for firm rooting.

To divide the bush, it is dug up, dried in the shade during the day, clearing of clods of earth or washing off the earth with water. The rhizome is divided into parts, each of which must have renewal buds.

Usage

Daylilies decorate green lawns, planting them in independent groups, or in company with other perennial plants. Curtains of them look picturesque on the banks of reservoirs.

Depending on the height of the view, they are suitable for different mixborder plans. Daylilies are combined in the background and middle planes of mixborders with Siberian irises, volzhankas, peonies. At the same time, the foreground can be decorated with badan, hosts, low astilbe, zinnias, heucheras.

Daylilies blooming in the second half of summer will become good neighbors for Korean chrysanthemums, rudbecky, dahlias, phlox.
