There are places on Earth where Aglaonema grows outdoors, delighting its admirers with patterned leathery leaves. Our climate for it is harsh and inhospitable, and therefore it is grown indoors, insulating it from bitter frosts and blizzards piercing with cold. Aglaonema can grow without habitual soil, which can be easily replaced by an artificial environment
Clan of Aglaonem
The genus Aglaonema (Aglaonema) unites several dozen evergreen herbaceous plants and shrubs. Born in the humid and warm tropical forests of Southeast Asia, she came to us as a houseplant.
This plant, quite easy to care for, attracts exotic lovers with its large oval leaves with a leathery and patterned surface. In summer, the plant forms cob inflorescences, which are unattractive, and therefore it is not for their sake that people acquire plants for their homes.
Aglaonema grows slowly, and therefore does not take up much space in the room.
It can grow well in an artificial environment, and therefore does not require the hassle of preparing the soil. This method of growing plants is called hydroponics.
Varieties
•
Aglaonema is changeable (Aglaonema commutatum) - different varieties of this species differ in the number of silvery spots on the leaves and the intensity of color.
So, for example, the variety "Silver Queen", which is the most popular among flower growers, has bright green long leaves reaching a length of 15 centimeters. Silver spots are scattered on the surface of the leaves. If the plant lives in a room with a high temperature and good illumination, then the leaves become almost completely silvery.
But the variety "Silver King" looks more modest. The plant is more compact in shape and leaves in a variety with a lighter pattern.
Maria leaves have fewer silvery spots than the royal couple.
•
Aglaonema pseudo-bracts (Aglaonema pseudobracteatum) - the owner of larger variegated leaves.
•
Aglaonema painted (Aglaonema pictum) - more erect, painted leaves adorn the plant.
Growing
If the climate permits, aglaonema can be grown outdoors by planting in well-drained soil in the spring. But, in most of the Russian open spaces, it grows as a houseplant.
Since aglaonema grew in the humid tropics, for its more successful development in room conditions, containers with a diameter of 15 centimeters with light and well-drained peat-based soil are selected. The containers are placed in containers filled with a mixture of peat, vermiculite and moss, which helps create a humid atmosphere.
When growing aglaonema, you can use the hydroponic method, which is very suitable for this plant.
It is believed that aglaonema does not make great demands on illumination, however, it is recommended to choose places for her that are bright, but without direct sunlight.
The optimum temperature for it is from 14 to 16 degrees. In winter, the bar may be slightly lower (10 grams), and in summer - higher (24 grams). It is important to maintain high air humidity at any temperature.
Watering in summer 2 times a week, less often in winter. During the active growing season, watering is combined with mineral feeding once every two weeks.
To maintain decorativeness, dry leaves are removed, and fresh ones are wiped with a damp sponge.
Reproduction
Possible reproduction by seeds and cuttings is a lengthy process, not to everyone's taste.
It is easier to propagate in the spring by dividing the bush, separating well-rooted shoots with three to four leaves.
Diseases and pests
May be affected by fungi that cause leaf spot or root rot.
The spider mite loves to occupy the leaves of the aglaonema.
