Strawberries belong to perennials, therefore, when you are going to plant seedlings of fragrant berries, remember that you are settling them here for more than one year. And in order for the plantation to please the owners with a rich harvest, it is important to thoroughly choose and prepare a site for planting this valuable crop. So, in what conditions does strawberry prefer to grow?

Strawberries prefer plains

The benefit of strawberries is that they can be planted on almost any type of soil. But under the condition of competent filling with nutrients, moderate soil moisture, and also that the site is not contaminated with persistent perennial weeds. Planting on such types of soils as sandy loam or light loam will be especially successful. But swampy, damp areas will not be able to please with a good development of outlets. In such conditions, strawberries not only look depressed in the spring-summer period, but also freeze out during the winter months.

At the same time, too dry soils, especially on strong slopes, are also not suitable for strawberries. Here, the snow will not linger on the plantation, and the beds will be bare under the gusts of the wind. The optimal arrangement of landings is on the plain. Also, gardeners should be warned against planting perennials in the lowlands. In this case, on a cold spring morning, coolness accumulates in such areas. This will damage the buds and flowers.

Strawberry neighbors

Despite their miniature growth, strawberries significantly deplete the soil in 3-4 years of nesting in one place. Therefore, experienced planters are engaged in fruit change in such areas, alternating perennials with other garden crops or flowers.

To do this, the area allotted for strawberries is divided equally or into 3 sectors. And until the time has come to move the sockets to a new place, in the neighboring beds they are growing potatoes, root crops or breaking a flower bed. Then the cultures are swapped.

Soil preparation for strawberries

A strict rule for preparing a site for a strawberry plantation is advance soil preparation. If carried out immediately before planting, the earth will settle and inevitably strip the roots, which is why the seedlings often die. Therefore, for the spring planting of strawberries, you need to take care of digging the beds in the fall, having cultivated the land on the future plantation to a depth of about 30 cm. And in the spring, only loosen the soil. When it comes to early autumn planting, the cultivation of the site begins about half a month before planting.

Recall that planting strawberries can be done throughout the warm season, but the best times are from late April to late May, as well as from the second decade of August to mid-September. Strawberries take about three weeks to take root. And if you are late with these dates, the plant does not have time to take root and can be severely damaged by frost. By the way, another advantage of spring planting is not only a more powerful development of the rosette, but also the laying of flower buds during the summer, due to which a good harvest will be obtained next year.

What are the ridges on the plantation for?

The sensitivity of strawberries to soil moisture determines the need to arrange high beds if the soil is poorly drained and water is retained on it. Such ridges are made with a height of about 30 cm, and the width is arranged up to 1 m. Landing on them is performed in a checkerboard pattern. Planting holes are made at a distance of about 25 cm from each other, and the row spacing is left about 30 cm. It is not necessary to part with planting, so as not to create favorable conditions for the development of gray rot.

On soil with a light texture, where moisture is well drained in a natural way, you can do without beds and plant on a leveled ground surface. Here, a distance of about 20 cm is made between the planting pits, the row spacing is left at least 60 cm.
