Raspberry (or raspberry) glassware lives literally everywhere and is very fond of raspberries. Caterpillars of this pest often cause irreparable harm to raspberry plantings. The shoots affected by them often break easily in the lower parts and bear very little fruit. Also, for damaged berry bushes, wilting and complete drying of the shoots are characteristic. In order to avoid such a deplorable situation, this pest must be dealt with
Meet the pest
Raspberry glass is a malicious blue-black butterfly, endowed with a thin body. The span of its transparent wings is 22 - 26 mm. The front wings of the pest are set off by a dark edge, and on the transverse partition you can see a black speck. On the abdomen of males there are also four transverse yellow stripes, while females have only three of them.
White caterpillars, reaching 25 - 30 mm in length, are endowed with yellowish-brown heads, as well as anal and chest plates of the same color. Pupae are light brown in color, and their size is about 22 - 26 mm.
The wintering of caterpillars of the second and also the third centuries occurs in the tunnels previously cut by them inside the stalks at the very bases or in the roots. In spring, as soon as sap flow begins, harmful caterpillars move into stalks and feed again, this time making numerous moves in the shoots. And in early June, they gnaw out flight holes, after which they pupate inside the stems. Twelve to eighteen days later, rather cute butterflies fly out, the years of which are observed mainly in June and July.
Some time later, the females, whose total fertility is about 100-200 eggs, begin to lay eggs near the raspberry stalks directly on the soil. They can also lay eggs directly on the stems at their very bases. Caterpillars revived after 9 - 12 days begin to actively gnaw out passages in plants. At the same time, in places of damage from the outside, characteristic swelling can be seen. And caterpillars that have reached the second and third centuries make their way to the roots and inside the stalks, where they find refuge until spring. Raspberry glass develops in just one generation, however, even during this time it manages to cause a lot of harm to fragrant raspberries.
How to fight
Among the natural enemies of the raspberry glass, it is worth mentioning the tahin and the braconid - they are quite good at reducing the number of these raspberry enemies.
When planting new raspberry bushes, the infected planting material should be discarded. Compliance with agrotechnical standards, as well as the rules for caring for berry crops, will be no less important. If possible, you should try to avoid all kinds of mechanical damage on the branches and fight annoying weeds. Regular inspection of berry bushes will help to identify the presence of raspberry glass on the site.
Before the butterflies start to fly out in the spring, as well as in the fall, drying and damaged shoots must be cut to the very root and immediately burned. Fruit-bearing shoots are also necessarily cut out, while there should be no stumps, since often raspberry glassware hibernates at their bases. And during the laying period, they also cultivate the soil near the plants. From May to July, it is also periodically loosened.
Before the leaf buds bloom, it is advisable to treat the raspberry bushes with Karbofos. For ten liters of water, it will be enough to take 60 g of this product, and for every ten bushes, about two liters of the resulting solution are consumed.
If the berry bushes were not treated with "Nitrafen" prior to bud blooming, then at the very beginning of bud blooming, it is permissible to spray with a 3% Bordeaux liquid.
A set of measures aimed at combating other pests of this berry crop also helps to protect raspberry plantings from the voracious raspberry glass.
