During the summer, fruit trees and berry bushes worked along with the gardener to give the owner of the site a rich harvest. And now it is the man's turn to thank his pets and take care of their well-being in the fall, as well as preparation for winter and spring activity. What should not be forgotten when sending trees for a temporary period of rest during the cold season? What tools are needed for this?
Until the leaves fell
Before the leaves begin to turn yellow and the fall of leaves comes, it is necessary to have time to do a lot in the garden. After the fruits from the trees are collected, you need to examine your pets for signs of scab. If this is the case, then until the branches have shed their leaves, the crown must be sprayed with a 4% urea solution. This procedure is also carried out on turfed areas.
The importance of the trunk circle
Another important event before the moment of active root growth comes is digging the soil in the near-trunk circles, as well as the introduction of organic matter and mineral fertilizing. The quality of the soil structure near the root system is very important for the development of the tree. To create the most favorable conditions, it must be kept in a loose state, free of weeds.
Therefore, gardeners who ignore the presence of a well-groomed tree-trunk circle around the tree will greatly lose. Even in the year of planting, it is recommended to create a halo of a near-stem circle with a radius of at least 75 cm in a young fruit tree. And as the pet develops, its area must be increased in diameter.
How deep to dig?
The depth of the autumn digging of soil in the near-trunk circle depends on the level of occurrence of the suction roots of the tree. So, for apple trees, pears, this indicator ranges from 10-20 cm. And for cherries and plums - up to 10 cm. This indicator can be found out individually by performing a control excavation according to the projection of the tree crown. It should also be borne in mind that the more you move away from the tree, the deeper the roots lie in the ground, so you need to dig deeper at the edge of the trunk circle, and not vice versa.
A hoe or a shovel?
For high-quality garden care, a gardener in his shed must have at least a minimum set of garden tools. To dig and loosen the soil in the near-trunk circles, you will need a hoe, a shovel, a garden pitchfork, a rake, and a scythe. In the spring and summer months, hoes are used more. They are very convenient for shallow loosening of the soil, weeding from weeds, breaking up lumps of dried earth. After that, the surface is leveled with a rake. In some cases, weeds are more convenient to mow, especially if they have not yet acquired seeds and are suitable for composting. Nitrogen fertilizers are applied for spring digging. It is better to plan such work after watering or heavy rainfall.
For deeper autumn digging, shovels are prepared. Before that, check the sharpness of the iron and the tightness of the tool handle. With the help of a shovel, it is much more convenient to rotate the seam with organic matter and phosphorus-potassium fertilizers embedded in the soil.
Also, the shovel is better suited for autumn digging in that in the process of digging with this tool in the near-trunk circle, the structure of the earth becomes coarsely lumpy, somewhat lumpy. And this creates the best conditions for freezing in these heaps of moisture, followed by thawing and high-quality soil moisture in the spring.
In some exceptions, the shovel is replaced with a garden pitchfork. This tool is indispensable when it becomes necessary to get rid of tenacious rhizomes of weeds. Wheatgrass belongs to such firmly sitting in the ground, for example - the pitchfork will help to extract it completely.
