Pruning perennials
Cut stems of many flowers are ideal natural material for snow retention and sheltering flower beds from frost, such as paniculata phlox.
Lilies
The stems cut in August are already well dried and now need to be removed. We unscrew or carefully pull out the remaining stem-rod from the ground. This technique stops the access of moisture and air to the bulb, which creates favorable conditions for wintering.
Delphinium
It is important to leave at least 20 cm when cutting the stem. This will exclude the freezing of the root, and in the spring it will prevent rotting of the root collar. It is advisable to plug the cut (garden pitch, clay, gum) or just bend the stem and pin it.
Preparing roses for wintering
On a dry day, we make hilling from sand and peat (1: 1). We cut off the buds, upper shoots, foliage. We spray with a copper-containing solution. If the shelter in the middle lane occurs in November, then the preparation of the stem begins in October. Bending in stages helps to avoid kinks. We fix the stem with staples, we provide the required slope in several steps, gradually increasing the angle.
Stamp roses
A safe and high-quality bending of a standard rose can be ensured by digging in the opposite side of the graft. We bend the stem step by step in 3-4 steps, while using brackets to fix the stem in several places. For cover, prepare a non-woven with a density (60 g / m2).
Harvesting rose cuttings
Autumn pruning of roses allows you to prepare material for grafting. Cuttings are taken from a ripe shoot, tied in bunches according to varieties, and marked with tags. Wrapped in sphagnum moss, folded in polyethylene and placed in the refrigerator.
Dahlias
It is better to dig dahlia root tubers when the aboveground part dies off, so you need to wait for the first frost. Then it requires drying in the room, cleaning from the ground. Cutting off the stem, a stump of 4-5 cm is left and powdered with charcoal powder. Now you need to withstand another week at t0 + 25C and then put it in the cellar / refrigerator until spring, where + 3 … + 5C. Before laying, the tubers are covered with a clay mash, sprinkled with sawdust, perlite, peat, sand.
Tuberous begonia
When the lower leaves of the begonia dry up and turn yellow, the plant is ready for digging. Until this moment, with frosts below -5C, the aboveground part must be covered. The extracted tubers are ventilated for several hours under a canopy, cleaned of soil and small roots. Storage takes place on a glazed loggia in a "breathing" polyethylene bag at + 5 … + 10C.
Cannes
The rhizome is harvested after the first frost and the death of the aboveground part. From possible freezing of the root collar, the plant hides in early October. It is necessary to dig it out in moist soil so that the earthen lump is well kept, since storage occurs with the ground at + 7 … + 8C. If the plant was grown in a container, then it is removed for storage along with the container.
Planting hyacinths
It is necessary to start planting hyacinths when the soil at a depth of 15 cm has reached + 5 … + 9C. Bulbs are placed at this depth with an interval of 12-15 cm. The earth must have humus, fertilizers and be moistened. A three-centimeter layer of fine sand is poured under the bottom. When falling asleep, the top layer is created from peat (5 cm).
Cooking clematis for winter
Knyazhiki and other species clematis are frost-resistant and do not require removal from the support, you just need to spud the base (30-40 cm). Plants with flowers on current shoots in October are cut to a height of 20 cm and covered with peat / humus (bucket on the root). In the future, in case of stable frosts, you need to cover it with spruce branches or non-woven material.
Clematis with buds on last year's stems need full cover. For ease of removal from the support, they are shortened to a height of 1.5 m, tied, laid on the ground, twisted with a ring, and fixed with wire / staples. The root hounds, a dense non-woven fabric (60 g / m2) is placed on the branches.
