The garden care package includes different types of pruning that can be done at certain times of the year. The main purpose of pruning is to obtain a high-quality and abundant harvest and preserve the health of trees and shrubs. To carry out pruning, summer residents will need tools such as a sharply sharpened pruner and a special garden saw
What is pruning in the fall?
In the autumn period of the year, in different situations, three types of pruning can be carried out - formative, rejuvenating or sanitary. They differ in their goals and purposes, and also have specific deadlines.
Formative pruning gives trees or shrubs an attractive look. Most often, such pruning is aimed at the formation of young crops and seedlings. Although in fact there are many cases where thinning or pruning of mature plants is required. The results of such pruning will be increased light transmission inside the crown, improved ventilation characteristics, increased fruiting and development of shoots from the sides of trees. Many shrubs undergo a similar procedure in the fall. With formative pruning, the summer resident needs to remove the shoots growing inside the crown, which interfere with each other.
Sanitary pruning refers to the destruction of diseased and damaged branches. In fact, it can be done regardless of the season. The quality of the crop depends directly on this type of pruning.
Another pruning - rejuvenating - is a great way to stimulate the growth of new shoots and release other plants. For each plant, the anti-aging haircut is carried out individually. However, in the autumn period of the year it is used only in the south of Russia for berry bushes.
Not all areas of our country can be pruned in the fall. For northern and temperate climates, this manipulation can become dangerous, since in frost the wood can dry out and freeze through. But sanitary pruning may be needed at any time. Therefore, in the fall, it will do more good than harm. In the southern Russian strip, autumn haircuts are needed most of all to unload spring work on the site. However, in case of cold snaps below -5C degrees, it is better to postpone the pruning to the spring months.
What crops are pruned in the fall?
Before the beginning of the winter period, fruit low shrubs that are resistant to frost feel great after pruning. Specifically, these include currants, raspberries, grapes, viburnum, raspberries, gooseberries, honeysuckle.
Some gardeners prefer spring pruning of currant and gooseberry bushes. But here you need to be very careful, because these plants bloom very early, therefore pruning becomes a threat to them. In autumn, it is required to remove from these crops all branches and elements lying on the ground that have outgrown the age of reproduction. In the first autumn, neglected shrubs can be rejuvenated, after which, after a year, formative pruning can be completed. There is an interesting nuance here - no more than one third of the branch is deleted at a time.
When rejuvenating shrubs with currants, you should know that black-fruited crops mean the remainder of the branches of no more than four to five years. In red-fruited shrubs, this time is increased to eight years. Each branch of the gooseberry bears fruit for ten years, but large berries are observed exclusively on young bushes. For this reason, branches with dark bark are cut out so that a new element grows in its place. You can increase the yield of gooseberries by removing all branches older than five years.
When pruning gooseberry and currant bushes, each cut should be carefully inspected. When observing a black center near a branch, it is better to remove them completely, and then burn them. This is the main sign of damage to the plant by currant glass.
Raspberries can also be pruned during the fall season. In this case, it is necessary to shorten the branches and remove the old fruiting elements. In cold Russian regions, absolutely all ground parts of remontant varieties of raspberries should be cut off. However, modern gardeners still recommend cutting these shrubs in the spring or summer.
