In fact, this group of vegetables appeared on the tables of our ancestors long before the now popular potatoes and tomatoes. But today they are more common in folklore than in the everyday menu. What is the first thing that comes to mind when you mention turnips, radishes, rutabagas? Fairy tales and sayings. But they have high nutritional qualities and deserve the attention of a modern gardener and a separate garden bed in his personal plot

Close relatives of turnips and turnips

Cabbage is a large and friendly family. It unites in itself more than 3 hundred genera and 4 thousand species. These include turnips, turnips, rutabagas, the same bitter radish. There is reason to suspect that in the famous folk tale about the turnip, the grandfather still planted turnips on the garden bed. These vegetables are very similar, but turnips are gigantic in size compared to turnips, and it so happens that the grown root vegetable does not even fit in a bucket. Therefore, it is really difficult to get a vegetable out of the ground, sometimes you have to dig it out.

Turnip is used both as a fodder crop and in the preparation of various culinary delights. The root vegetable goes well in salads with carrots, apples, boiled eggs. Like turnips, turnips can be stewed, used as a side dish for meat dishes, stuffed and baked.

Radish and radish - is there a difference?

Radish differs from radish in a more pungent taste and the size of the root crop is noticeably larger. The smallest root vegetable in a radish will be twice the size of the largest radish. And the ripening period for radish is longer. If you can get the harvest of radish in three weeks, then the root crop of the radish will form, depending on the variety, from two to four months.

In addition, the radish is famous for its rich content of essential mustard oils. It is an excellent appetite stimulant. In addition, due to its healing qualities, it has found application in traditional medicine.

Features of the reproduction of cabbage root crops

Among the advantages of all cabbage root crops is their high cold resistance. But they also have their own whims: they are demanding on soil fertility, prefer loose soil and are moisture-loving crops.

Organic fertilizers, for example, rotted manure, must be applied under the radish and turnip. Mineral fertilizers are applied in the same way as for white cabbage - nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in a ratio of 2: 4: 1. And for turnips and radishes, their rate is reduced by a third.

Turnips are sown in open ground in two terms:

• to get the first harvest in summer - sowing is carried out in early spring;

• for winter storage, repeat the procedure in early July.

The technology of multi-line tapes is used. The distance between the rows is left about 20 cm, the row spacing is made about 0.5 m.

Rutabaga is propagated by sowing seeds in open ground and through seedlings. In the first case, crops are started in early May. Growing seedlings has the advantage that under protected ground conditions the plants are better protected from damage by the cruciferous flea beetle. For this, sowing is carried out in mid-April. Seedlings are planted at the age of 35-40 days from the third decade of May. The holes are dug in a checkerboard pattern of 25 x 25 and 30 x 20 cm.

Radish, despite the long period of development, is not recommended to be sown in the early stages. This leads to the formation of a flower stem. In addition, steming begins on long dry days. Sowing radish is best planned for the last days of May and early June.
