Trying to equip their home and create maximum comfort in it, modern housewives are engaged in the cultivation of indoor plants that can brighten up the gray everyday life with their delicate foliage, bright inflorescences and a pleasant aroma. But, unfortunately, not everyone has the opportunity to water them regularly. There are also moments when the owners leave their home in connection with leaving on a long business trip or vacation, but there is absolutely no one to entrust the keys to their home to them, as a result, they leave the plants to their fate. In this case, an innovative invention was invented, or rather a self-watering pot that can keep ornamental plants and flowers alive
About self-watering pots and how they work
Self-watering pots will ensure that your indoor crops are regularly and properly watered. This magical unit is equipped with a water-absorbing rope, along which water rises to the plants. This method of irrigation is effective, rational and acceptable for many plants, since they receive the amount of water necessary for their normal development. All the owner needs to do is fill the reservoir located at the bottom of the self-watering pot with water.
Firms involved in the production of such pots are introducing special indicators into them to determine the amount of water in the tank. Most often in modern stores, you can find self-watering pots with ginger squirrels, which hides if the tank runs out of water. In addition to their main purpose, self-watering pots are a stylish, funny and eye-catching interior item for a living room, kitchen, children's room and even an office.
Another undoubted advantage of self-watering pots is the fact that liquid or soluble mineral fertilizers can be added to the tank, which, together with water, will nourish the plants. In standard self-watering pots with a volume of 500 ml, water is enough for 5-10 days, in larger specimens - up to 14-20 days. This innovative product is made of high quality plastic. At the 2011 Thailand TIFF International Furniture Show, a collection of self-irrigated pots was presented, which won the award for exceptional environmental friendliness.
Undoubtedly, self-watering pots will be a welcome and useful gift for any woman, because all the fairer sex have a special love for flowers. You can be 100% sure that such a present will not go unnoticed, it will remind its owner of the donor for many years. Children will also appreciate such a gift, because learning the basics of indoor floriculture will become doubly interesting.

In fact, there is nothing difficult in making a self-watering pot. This interesting activity will delight all family members, especially children.
To make a self-watering pot, you must have:
* two-liter plastic bottle;
* cotton or polyester lace (you can also use gauze or bandage);
* large nail;
* knife or scissors;
*a hammer.
Carefully cut the bottle in half. Make a hole in the center of the lid with a nail and a hammer. Further, we separate 20-30 cm from the lace (a little more is possible), this segment will serve as the so-called "bridge" between plants and a reservoir of water. Fold the lace in half, moisten it, thread it through the hole in the lid and tie a knot to secure it. We screw the lid with a cord onto a part of the bottle. Insert the upper part in an inverted position into the remaining half filled with water, add soil and sow seeds. We spill the soil in the standard way, in the future the pot will cope on its own.
Other self-watering methods
Not everyone has the opportunity to purchase an auto-irrigation pot. No problem! Other equally effective watering methods will come to the rescue. You can try to artificially create a hibernation period for plants, then their vital processes will slow down, and they will consume much less moisture than usual. The flower pots are removed from the illuminated places, the buds and inflorescences are removed from them, and the foliage is thinned as much as possible, then the curtains are drawn. It is advisable to put the pots in a container of water for 15 minutes. Just leave the pots in the water at the time of departure, as this threatens with rotting of the root system.
You can use another proven method - creating wicks. Twist the wicks from bandages, gauze or cotton material. Any free container is filled with water, set a few centimeters above the level of the surface on which the pot with the plant is located. The wicks are moistened, one end is embedded in the soil, and a weight is tied to the other and lowered into a container of water. It is important to remember: the larger the volume of the pot, the more wicks there should be, otherwise all this will be useless, the plants will not receive enough moisture.
