Perennials in the garden

Perennial flowers in the garden delight the eye with their decorative appearance for many years. But this does not mean that once having planted chrysanthemums or gladioli in your flower garden, you can forget about your flower beds, and they will bloom beautifully on their own, without the participation of the caring hands of a florist. They, like other plants, require attention and care

Chrysanthemum supports

How can you not fall in love with chrysanthemum? This flower dissolves its fluffy buds until the first autumn frosts, exudes a delicate pleasant aroma and stands in the cut for a long time. Perhaps the only complaint about this plant is its too active summer growth. The chrysanthemum not only widely spreads the branches of the bush, but can also grow strongly upward - so much so that you will need to use the pegs driven in next to it for a garter. They are placed on the windy side to increase resistance to strong air currents, and tied with twine, twine. When there are no pronounced prevailing winds in your area, experienced florists recommend installing such supports on the west side.

For beds with chrysanthemums of strong growing varieties, you can arrange a frame support like a horizontal trellis. To do this, pegs are dug in along the perimeter of the site with landings, and a wire is pulled over them, forming a mesh with spacious cells

Tomatoes are not the only ones

Plants of large-flowered varieties require special attention. In order for the chrysanthemum to have impressive buds, it needs to be helped to get rid of excess parts that consume nutrients. To do this, it is mandatory to carry out pinching of lateral shoots that form in the axils of the leaves. If this is not done, excessive branching will be a stumbling block on the way to the goal of obtaining luxurious large flowers.

This work should be done as early as possible. First of all, while the shoot is still small, it reduces the risk of severe damage to the main stem and leaves when it is removed. In addition, a delay with this technique will negatively affect the growth of the main stem itself.

What gladioli have no place in a flower bed

Majestic gladioli are good in flower beds and in bouquets. It often happens that when planting one variety during flowering, you can also find a representative of another. If they are unwanted guests in the flowerbed, then you need to get rid of them immediately, as soon as they are discovered. The biological feature of gladioli is such that the corms of plants form numerous babies. Subsequently, they will increasingly mix with the main variety, and it will be extremely difficult to remove them from the flower garden. And this is important when the flower bed has a clearly and harmoniously planned color scheme or if the flowers are grown for sale.

When varietal purity is important, plants are also removed from the beds, the shape and flowers of which are uncharacteristic for the cultivated variety. It is also important to recognize and get rid of disease-infested specimens. Viral infections are manifested by mosaic color on the leaves and pale spots on the petals of flowers. These plants degenerate on their own and become the source of the spread of the disease among others.

Fungal disease is signaled by the early yellowing of the leaves, their dying off. Typically, this unhealthy yellowness spreads from top to bottom. Fungus infection is also indicated by the appearance of yellow and brown spots on the leaves.

Another dangerous enemy of gladioli is thrips. They reproduce very quickly in warm, dry summers with dry weather. Their activity in the flowerbed can be recognized by small white spots. The presence of parasites affects the petals: they become curly, and the flower itself is deformed. If you do not get rid of the parasite, soon a massive defeat of the plantings will lead to the fact that the flower stalks will wither, and the buds will not bloom.
