Original azolla pinnate

Azolla pinnate is very widespread in the impressive territory of the picturesque African continent. It can often be found on such large islands as Madagascar and New Guinea, as well as in Australia and Asia. Azolla cirrus grows mainly in flooded pastures and in ponds with stagnant water. This aquatic inhabitant prefers an aquatic environment enriched with all kinds of nutrient compounds. At the same time, azolla plumose is excellent for cultivation in aquariums

Getting to know the plant

The length of the pinnate azolla, as a rule, does not exceed 2.5 cm. Porous branches with triangular contours, shortening closer to the tops, extend from its bizarre stems. The rhizomes of this beautiful green pet are feathery and slightly branched, and the masses are distinguished by the absence of glochidia.

The leaves of azolla pinnate are characterized by rather small sizes (their size almost never exceeds 2 mm), and in shape they can be either sharp or rounded. The upper leaf lobes are equipped with unicellular villi, due to which they appear slightly velvety. In addition, such villi endow leaf surfaces with water-repellent properties - water droplets practically do not linger on them. The color of azolla pinnate leaves can vary from neutral green tones to rich brownish. Sometimes they can even be painted in pleasant blue-green hues. All the leaves float on the water surface, giving almost any area a special flavor.

It is noteworthy that the leaves of this aquatic inhabitant contain symbiotic cyanobacteria that absorb nitrogen from the atmosphere.

Outwardly, the azolla feathery bears a resemblance to the Azolla Carolina, so it sometimes happens that these two species of the original aquatic inhabitant can be confused.

Azolla plumose, when cultivated in aquariums, creates very favorable conditions for tiny fry of fish, since it serves them not only as an excellent shelter, but also perfectly saturates the aquatic environment with oxygen. In addition, in such a favorable environment, many ciliates develop well, which are wonderful food for funny fish.

How to grow

Compared to Azolla Carolina, Azolla plumose is more thermophilic. Nevertheless, in the summer, it can be easily grown in garden ponds (in an aquatic environment with muddy soil and a relatively low water level). But this water beauty can normally endure winter only in well-lit and well-warmed places. For its comfortable cultivation, the choice should be stopped on tropical aquariums.

Also, for comfortable growth and full development of the luxurious azole pinnate, the presence of phosphorus and druse in sufficient quantities is required in the water. And it usually does not react to the content of various organic compounds in high doses in water.

Despite the fact that this aquatic inhabitant perfectly survives in water with an acidity of 3, 5 to 10, it is still better to maintain this indicator at a level of 4, 5 to 7. As for the temperature of the aquatic environment, it should be in the range from twenty to thirty degrees. It is noteworthy that pinnate azolla is completely unable to exist if the temperature of the aquatic environment drops below five degrees or exceeds forty-five degrees.

When growing azolla pinnate, it is important to take care of very bright lighting - its power should not be lower than 0.8 W / l. The most favorable for its comfort is a twelve-hour daylight hours.

There are two ways to enhance the growth of azolla pinnate. The first way is to lower the illumination to 15,000 lux and the acidity to 5-6. And in the second method, these parameters are increased: lighting up to 60,000 lux, and acidity up to 9-10.

The amazing azolla pinnate can also reproduce in two ways - either sexually with the help of spores, or in a vegetative way by dividing branches. However, nowadays, this aquatic beauty is rarely cultivated.
