The apple-plantain aphid is very harmful to apple trees, provoking deformation and reddening of the leaves, with their subsequent withering away. Young seedlings of fruit trees are especially affected. Attacked by these evil pests, the tops of the shoots and leaves gradually curl up and dry out rather quickly, and the growth of apple branches often stops altogether. And the fruits on the affected trees are formed ugly, underdeveloped and completely unsuitable for human consumption

Meet the pest

The plantain aphid is a miniature sucking insect (its size does not exceed 3.5 mm), the life cycle of which consists of several different generations: wingless founders emerging from eggs; asexual virgins, who can be both winged and wingless; normal (amphigonic) males and females. At the same time, oviparous amphigonic females appear only closer to the end of the growing season. And all parthenogenetic generations of pests are viviparous.

Wintering of harmful aphids usually takes place in the phase of eggs, which are laid by sucking parasites in the fall on the bark of young shoots. All eggs are characterized by their characteristic shine, oval shape, up to 0.5 mm long and black in color. True, freshly laid eggs are usually colored in light greenish tones.

When tiny buds begin to bloom in early spring, voracious larvae will hatch from the eggs. By the way, outwardly they are very similar to adults. The harmfulness of the larvae lies in the fact that they are capable of producing entire colonies of aphids.

The founders are endowed with wide pear-shaped bodies and reach about 2.3 mm in size. All of them are painted in grayish-greenish tones, sometimes with small admixtures of reddish, brownish or yellowish shades. And on top of the body of each founder is covered with powder-like white wax. The legs of pests are characterized by a yellowish tint, and their thighs, tops of the legs and legs are painted in blackish tones.

The bodies of wingless virgins are also pear-shaped and reach about 1.9 mm in length. And their covers are painted in light brownish-greenish tones and covered with a well-visible dusting. However, young individuals can be painted in pinkish shades, and they often lack pollination. The antennae of wingless virgins always reach the base of the tubules.

The size of normal (amphigonic) females is about 2 mm. All of them are characterized by a fusiform shape, lack of wings and a lemon-yellow color. And around their tubes (and between them too), you can see small rusty-brown specks.

As for normal (amphigonic) males, they grow up to 1.8 mm in length. Unlike females, each male is endowed with wings and is colored brownish-black. On the upper sides of the abdomens of males there are rather large spots of a quadrangular shape (each individual has one spot), and on the sides of their abdomens you can see rounded black spots (three on each side).

How to fight

In early spring, before budding begins, and the air warms up to five to twenty degrees, fruit trees are started to be treated with Nitrafen or Oleocubrite - the processing data is aimed at destroying the eggs of harmful aphids.

And in order to cope with the larvae, in the interval between the blossoming of apple buds and the flowering of fruit trees, they are sprayed with insecticides. Especially good for such spraying are Trichlorol, Vofatox, Metaphos, Karbofos, Cyanox or Decis. It is quite acceptable to use such drugs as "Phosphamide", "Ambush" or "Antio". By the way, during the summer season, you can carry out repeated treatments with any of these drugs.

Alternative methods are also suitable for combating evil aphids: various herbal preparations are actively used against these pests, as well as a soap solution prepared on the basis of soft water (about 300 g of soap is taken for a ten-liter bucket).
