Even wormwood tastes less bitter, because you don't expect anything else from it. But an appetizing green cucumber from its own garden, like a nettle will burn the tongue with unexpected bitterness and annoyance: "They looked after him, looked after him, and he was born so ungrateful!"

Bitter cucumbers

You bite off a piece of a beautiful and crispy cucumber, and you will spit it out with frustration - such bitterness in your mouth will creep out, as if you grabbed wormwood. And what was wrong with him that the cucumber grew so intolerably bitter? Where did the vegetable grower not look? Let's try to figure it out.

As a rule, dark green cucumbers are bitter. Bitterness is more pronounced near the "tail", and sometimes spreads throughout the cucumber. The carrier of bitterness is the substance "cucurbitacin".

In principle, bitter cucumbers can be attributed to healers, because a compound with the name "cucurbitacin", obtained from a number of plants, is actively used in the treatment of ovarian and breast cancer. True, to obtain the medicine, not traditional cucumbers are used, but, for example, the "colocynth" plant from the Pumpkin family. This plant has many different names, including, there is such - "bitter cucumber". So, if bitter cucumbers are born in your garden, perhaps there is reason for joy, not grief.

And yet, we grow cucumbers not in order to prepare medicines from them, but in order to feast on them with appetite. Therefore, let's look for the reasons that provoke bitterness in cucumbers. And there are several such reasons that disrupt the normal growth of cucumbers:

• Lack of moisture in the soil.

• Overheating in a greenhouse or greenhouse.

• Abnormally hot weather.

• The whims of summer in the form of a prolonged cold snap.

• Lack of soil loosening.

If, nevertheless, you did not manage to fulfill all the conditions for the normal development of the plant, and the cucumbers are bitter, you can send them for salting. By winter, the bitterness from them will go into the brine, and you can enjoy pickles without bitterness.

Harvesting frequency

Cucumbers are very early ripening, and therefore the collection of fruits should be carried out every other day, early in the morning, when they are full of moisture and juicy.

In order not to harm the whips, picking cucumbers is best done with a sharp knife or scissors. Along the way, with cute cucumbers, you should remove various freaks in the form of hooks so that they do not unnecessarily take away food from the plant.

If you are going to start your own seeds, leave a couple of cucumbers, preventing others from overgrowing, to the detriment of young and juicy specimens.

Drying of fruit tips

Although cucumbers do not have bones like humans do, the plant needs calcium for its fruit to grow properly. If there is not enough calcium in the soil, then the tips of the fruits, or even a third or half of the fruit, begin to dry out.

The problem is solved by feeding the plant with calcium nitrate. In the absence of such, you can use wood ash, adding 150-200 grams for each plant.

White bloom on the leaves

The moisture content of cucumbers does not get along with excessive watering with insufficient ventilation of the greenhouse or greenhouse. This is manifested by the appearance of a white coating on the leaves of the plant. The same plaque can appear in damp and cold weather.

White bloom suggests that the cucumbers are sick with powdery mildew and they need a doctor. And treating is always very troublesome and tedious. It's easier to prevent illness. To do this, when watering cucumbers in cloudy weather, do not moisten the foliage, but carefully water only the soil.

Disease prevention is the timely removal of weeds around the garden bed, greenhouse or greenhouse, as well as maintaining optimal growing conditions.
