The gardener invests his strength and soul into the plants grown on the site, but suddenly various gluttonous pests invade his territory, viruses make their way with invisible paths, parasitic fungi living in the soil are creeping up to the roots, sometimes nullifying all the work
Root rot
If during the day, when it is warm in the greenhouse, the ground is sufficiently moist, the leaves suddenly become limp and drooped, like mourning flags that have been lowered, it means that root rot has started in the soil. Its presence is evidenced by the slow growth of the plant, and the brownish roots, which suddenly turned into strong white roots.
What can be done to save the plant?
• Irrigate the beds only with warm water, the temperature of which is above 20 degrees.
• Replace the soil with a new and healthy one.
• Rejuvenate the plant by giving it the opportunity to put down new roots. To do this, carefully lay the stem on the garden bed and sprinkle it with fresh soil. While new roots are growing, so that the cucumber has enough moisture, we spray it with water.
Yellow spots on the leaves
When autumn is still far away, and the cucumber leaves suddenly began to turn yellow, it means that the leaves do not have enough potassium or magnesium for adequate nutrition, or parasitic fungi have started in the soil.
•
Lack of potassium. With a lack of potassium, yellowness begins its journey along the leaf, starting from its edges. Then she slowly moves between the veins of the leaf to its center.
•
Lack of magnesium. With a lack of magnesium, yellowness immediately occupies the leaf blade, spreading between the veins. Older leaves are primarily affected.
•
Parasitic fungi. Fungi cause two diseases: anthracnose and ascochitis. Moreover, diseases affect not only the leaves, but also other parts of the plant. The wrecking of fungi is manifested by the appearance of spots on the leaves, stems, fruits. The affected areas are treated with Bordeaux liquid.
"Chicken feet" or "umbrellas" instead of leaves
If, instead of young, beautiful heart-shaped leaves, freaks appear on the stem, resembling chicken legs or umbrellas, then the plant does not have enough calcium. There can be several reasons for calcium deficiency:
• the bed was overfed with ammonium nitrate, which interferes with the absorption of calcium;
• insufficient and irregular watering delays the penetration of calcium into the plant;
• poor ventilation of the greenhouse or greenhouse;
• soil compaction.
In addition to taking measures for timely watering, airing, loosening, you should feed the cucumbers with crushed chalk, or add calcium nitrate to the soil.
Falling ovaries
The appearance of the ovaries pleases and creates the anticipation of an imminent delicacy. But instead of growing and filling with juice, the ovaries suddenly begin to turn yellow and fall off. There may be several reasons for this unseemly behavior:
• The youth of the plant. When there are still not so many leaves, they are not able to feed a large number of newly born ovaries. No matter how “bleeding” the heart of the vegetable grower, you will have to part with a part of the ovaries, removing every second one.
• Lack of calcium. The reasons for the lack of calcium for nutrition have been discussed above. The lack is reflected not only on the leaves, but also on the ovaries, which begin to turn yellow and dry out.
• Root rot. Root disease affects the condition of all aboveground parts of the plant, including the ovaries.
Gelatinous spots on cucumbers
If the insidious fungi that infect the leaves are not timely found, they will safely move to growing fruits, covering their surface first with dry, and later with gelatinous spots.
The provocateur of the disease with the beautiful name "olive spot" are microscopic fungi that activate their activity when the low night temperature in the greenhouse is combined with high humidity in it.
Spraying with Bordeaux liquid helps to fight disease. Leaves and cucumbers that are already affected should be removed.
