Sea buckthorn in the garden

Sea buckthorn is often planted in the garden for decorative purposes. This plant has the appearance of a shrub with a low size. Sea buckthorn grows in different parts of the Earth. In the wild, it can be found in areas where the soil is sandy or pebble. You can often observe a sea buckthorn bush near the banks of reservoirs, ponds, streams and rivers. In mountainous areas, sea buckthorn can grow even at the level of two meters from the sea. In different countries, sea buckthorn is valued for its healing properties. By the way, the roots, leaves and berries of the plant are often used in Tibetan medicine

How is sea buckthorn planted?

Before you start planting sea buckthorn, it is worth determining in advance its variety and type. In a quality plant, you can see berries of medium and large sizes, which will have a sweet and sour taste. The color of the fruit can be yellowish or orange, sometimes even red.

Interestingly, all sea buckthorn bushes are divided into female and male specimens. As a result, in order to obtain a large-scale bountiful harvest, you need to plant two types of these trees in the same area together. Since they will pollinate each other, the harvest will not only be large, but high-quality and good.

As a place for planting sea buckthorn in the garden, landlords usually choose the edges of the site near lawns and wooden structures. But it is worth making sure that the place where the sea buckthorn will be planted is a little further from the soil cultivation area, since the sea buckthorn root system consists of weakly branching elements that can stretch ten or more meters from the plant. The roots are usually located shallow from the soil surface. Therefore, even a little damage can cause the plant to become lethargic and weak. Also, do not dig the earth near the sea buckthorn. This can provoke the appearance of an additional growth of sea buckthorn, which sprouts precisely in the zone of root damage. It is best to choose an open area where a lot of light will fall on the sea buckthorn, and other plants will not shade it. Then such conditions will become the most favorable for sea buckthorn.

The time for planting sea buckthorn is usually in early spring. But in the fall, you should not plant these trees. Fertilizers that will be applied to the holes for planting seedlings will be able to provide nutrition to the plant for a couple of years.

Soil preparation and sea buckthorn care

Before planting sea buckthorn in the selected area, the soil should be fertilized there with humus and sand in a one-to-one ratio. Approximately two kilograms per square meter is a sufficient amount of fertilizer. In addition, each planting hole must also be impregnated with potassium and phosphorus-based products.

In a situation where the soil is acidic to the garden, wood ash or lime must also be added to the above fertilizers. In the case of planting a large number of plants, a distance of up to two and a half meters must be observed between the bushes, and a row from another row must be separated by a distance of at least four meters.

After the sea buckthorn has already been planted on the site, the soil in this place must be kept on the floor with black steam for a couple of years. When this period is over, it will be possible to plant other plants next to the trees - for example, dill or parsley, which do not require much care in their care. Many gardeners plant grass near sea buckthorn, which is then mowed and used as fertilizer. The soil next to the sea buckthorn bushes is processed to a depth of seven centimeters. The summer resident will need to constantly check the moisture content of the earth located here.

During heat and drought, watering the sea buckthorn will have to take into account the amount of water in three or five buckets per square meter surrounded by the trunk. When points begin to form, from which fruits will then appear, in June-July it is required to control the level of moisture in the soil especially carefully. If, after irrigation, a crust remains on the surface of the earth, then it should be slightly loosened to a shallow depth.

Once every three years, mineral and organic fertilizers must be applied to the soil where sea buckthorn grows. Ten kilograms of organic matter and twenty grams of phosphorus and potassium-based products are enough for one square meter from the circumference of the trunk. Sometimes trees are also fertilized with nitrogen.
