The second half of May is the time for planting Coleus seedlings in the garden. Despite the fact that this ornamental-deciduous plant and its flowers are not of great aesthetic value, the variegated foliage can decorate the garden no worse than the brightest inflorescences of other plants. What measures should be taken so that the Coleus is magnificently spread out on your flower garden?

Coleus seedlings at home

Coleus is propagated both by seeds and vegetatively. When sowing seeds for seedlings, seedlings dive. Then the grown seedlings are transplanted into more spacious pots. Well, at the end of spring, when a stable warm air temperature is established, they can be moved to a permanent place of residence in the open ground.

If the weather is not conducive to disembarkation, it is better to postpone this event. With a sharp cold snap, flowers in the open field can be severely damaged. And if the seedlings outgrow in indoor conditions, then it does not matter. You can not just pinch the stalk, but cut it directly to half its length. Thanks to this technique, the bush will only branch better. And do not throw away the cut cutting - it can be used for rooting. Thus, from one seed the grower will receive two beautiful plants. Just before sending the cutting into a glass of water for rooting, it is necessary to cut the lower leaves by half or even more.

Often, flower growers complain that the plant turns out to be completely of the wrong color, which was declared on the package, or the leaves of the cuttings turn pale during the rooting process. This is a common occurrence in indoor environments. It is explained by the lack of light, artificial lighting. When your flower “moves” to the flowerbed and is caressed by the sun's rays, the picture will change dramatically - the leaves will become variegated and bright. Burgundy, pink, lemon, purple, marbled, striped - what kind of colors do not exist in nature!

What other embarrassment can happen to seedlings before getting into open ground? Coleus-prankster is able to begin to form inflorescences and dissolve buds. If this happens, these babies must be cut off. The same procedure must be carried out with cuttings that are put on rooting. Even if the buds are very small, they should be pinched off.

Coleus transplant into open ground

Before you land your pets in the open air, they must first be given time to acclimatize in the new conditions. To do this, you can start taking them out to the garden for a short time so that they get used to the ultraviolet light and fresh air.

If it happens in a country house or in a country house, and the owners visit there once or twice a week, while carrying the pots back and forth is not handy, then they are immediately planted in the garden, but with one condition. Beds with "new settlers" should be shaded for several days with a piece of cloth or other material so that the leaves do not suffer from sharp direct contact with the sun.

Coleus are unpretentious in leaving. They do not need feeding. In dry hot weather, watering will be needed. Flowers will decorate the infield until autumn. In September, they are recommended to be returned to room conditions. If you do this later, when a cool and humid temperature is set outside the window, then when it gets into warm, dry apartments, the coleus experience severe stress.

Well, for those who planned to grow coleus as an annual, it is possible to advise at the end of the season to take cuttings from plants growing in open ground for rooting. They will decorate the home interior during the winter period, and next year they will again be able to move to your open-air flower beds.
