Sometimes very simple moments of gardening work help to protect vegetable crops from annoying lovers of feasting at someone else's expense. This does not require the cost of chemicals, but requires a little ingenuity, observation and the use of our grandmothers' gardening techniques
To emerge victorious in the fight against harmful insects when growing the most familiar vegetable crops, you need to know at least a little about the nature of plants, their relationship with each other, as well as the preferences in the diet of these same pests.
We grow all types of cabbage
* A very simple rule warns gardeners that using the same piece of land to grow not only cabbage, but also other plants belonging to the Cruciferous family (radishes, radishes, turnips …) for two years in a row means adding to yourself the hassle of pest control … After all, insects that love to crunch a cabbage leaf quickly settle in a favorable territory and the next summer, after wintering perfectly in the soil and adding in quantity, greedily pounce on new plantings. If, next summer, this plot is given for other plants, then cabbage lovers will starve to death without any effort on the part of the gardener.
* To the traditional advice: "do not plant plants of the same family next to each other", in the case of cabbage growing, you can take a little outside the box. Together with cabbage seeds (when sown directly into the ground), seeds of such relatives are sown, which you do not mind removing later. For example, it can be the ubiquitous colza, rapeseed, turnip. Cruciferous fleas, who love to feast on cabbage on "clean" beds, pounce on these cabbage companions with great appetite, which the gardener, during the last thinning, will remove along with the pests.
* All types of cabbage respond with gratitude to hilling. This simple procedure allows the plant to grow additional roots, which provide additional nutrition to the aerial portions, which is beneficial to the crop.
We grow tomatoes, a storehouse of vitamins
* We plant strongly elongated tomato seedlings in open ground in a slope, laying the stem in a dug groove 10-12 centimeters deep, pouring water into it. We fix the stem with wooden flyers so that it does not rise from its shelter, and we cover it with earth. The stem will give life to new roots, which in turn will provide the plant with additional nutrition.
* If there are few seedlings, but there is a lot of land and there is a desire to have more tomato bushes, then the seedlings can be divided in half. You can also root strong stepchildren with buds, which, under favorable conditions and good care, will have time to give an additional harvest.
* For fresh tomatoes to be stored longer, they should not be stacked "in a mountain", but in one layer. The stalk should be at the top. The photo below shows how to avoid storing tomatoes. So it can be stacked for short storage:
We grow cucumbers
* To stimulate the formation of more female flowers, it is recommended not to water the soil before flowering, allowing it to dry out a little.
* To increase the productivity of cucumber lashes, picking cucumbers is carried out daily, you can even twice a day: in the morning and in the evening.
* To keep the cucumbers fresh for several days, they can be kept in water by submerging the cucumbers with the stems down three-quarters of their length.
Mistake when growing onions
There is one piece of advice that supposedly accelerates the ripening of the bulb. It sounds like this: "You should trample the bulbous feathers so that the bulb ripens faster." Experts say that handling the plant in this way will reduce the quality of the bulb, since the nutrients still contained in the tops will not be able to penetrate the bulb.
In order to fully utilize the nutrition coming from the tops to the bulb, it is much more effective to slightly raise the bulb with the roots together with the soil with a fork and leave it in this position until the bulbous feathers dry out.
