Any summer resident is familiar and we expect a spring harvest of radish throughout the long winter. This is one of the very first vegetables that appears on the table at the beginning of the gardening season. Today there are a huge number of varieties of radish. They all differ in color, size and taste. However, for novice gardeners, radishes often cannot develop and grow normally. There are a lot of problems - damage by harmful insects, cracking and much more
Nevertheless, the bright taste of radish makes summer residents look for options for growing crops, taking into account all the nuances. For example, now there is a great alternative to the usual radish - daikon radish. The only drawback is that it can only be harvested in autumn.
But pod radish came into fashion among summer residents not so long ago, but it is already grown in many beds. Some gardeners have already managed to grow a similar useful vegetable crop in their garden more than once. They argue that the fruit of the green radish is similar in taste and juiciness to a regular radish. But there is a slight peppercorn in this vegetable. Green radish is perfect for making summer salads, okroshka and some soups. Many summer residents eat pod radish, fried in oil, with bread and salt. Also, this vegetable is often pickled, salted.
The fruits of the plant are pod-shaped. The length of one vegetable is usually between ten and twelve centimeters. It is believed that pod radish came to our country from the shores of the island of Java. Due to its unusual appearance, it received a lot of interesting names - rat tail, serpentine radish and others. This culture in our country can reach a maximum length of one and a half meters. Sometimes overgrown pod radish requires tying up. Modern experts are convincing of the benefits of chubby radish for the digestive system, intestinal microflora, blood vessels, joints and for protecting immunity from colds.
A huge number of gardeners advise growing pod radish on types of soil with good drainage. The beds should be well lit by the sun all day. The principles of caring for pod radish are practically the same as those for regular radishes. Watering cannot be interrupted even for a short period of time.
The soil where the pod radish is grown must always be moist. Radish perfectly accumulates nitrates, due to which there is no need to apply fertilizers if the soil for planting has been prepared in advance. The only exception is that pod radish needs to be fertilized with ash.
The plant can easily tolerate frosts up to minus two degrees. You can grow pod radish using seedlings. On the windowsill indoors, the vegetable crop grows and develops very well. You can plant seed to create seedlings at any time in winter, controlling the ripening time in the open air. The seedlings of the pod radish and the sprouts of the common radish are almost identical. All of them are formed seven days after planting. On the twentieth day of planting, the plants begin to develop intensively. They take on a bush appearance very soon.
It is worth noting the beautiful decorative appearance of the garden radish bed when the vegetable crop blooms. The very first fruits in the harvest can be harvested in a month and a half. At this moment, the bushes grow up to one hundred and fifty centimeters and are gaining flower stalks. Also at this moment, you can observe their enhanced branching.
The flowers of the plant are pale pink. Some gardeners argue that pod radish is an unpretentious and non-capricious plant. But it is necessary to water the crop often and regularly. The soil should always be moist.
The pods from the middle and lower branches are eaten. But you need to pinch the tops of the branches in a timely manner. After offering fruit, shoots can be observed on the branches from the side. Fruits will also be formed on them. After they dry, you need to cut off the pods, and tie them into bundles, hang them out to dry.
In some situations, the bushes of the pod radish can even grow up to two meters. The shrubs themselves are always very vigorous and have heavy leaves. If the plant is not tied up, then in the process of development it will fall on its side. These factors must be taken into account even during the organization and equipment of the beds for the cultivation of pod radish. This radish can have either long or short pods (bright green or purple), depending on the variety chosen. Stems can be erect or wriggling. More than forty pods are formed on one plant during the entire growing period.
