How often we get eggshells after the cooking process! And we throw it away, without even thinking about how much benefit it can bring us if we use it in gardening! After all, eggshells are a whole calcium treasure! And calcium is undoubtedly needed by many plants, but tomatoes, eggplants, peppers and cauliflower especially appreciate it. In addition, if your soil is acidic, then the calcium obtained from the eggshell will normalize the soil balance much faster than regular chalk
What are the benefits of the shell?
Firstly, as I wrote above, eggshells perfectly normalize the soil balance, so if the soil is acidic in your area, then crushed shells are your best assistant. It is much better and more effective than chalk.
Secondly, many gardeners are familiar with such a disease as black leg. If she started up in a box with seedlings, then everything - almost all of the seedlings will die. Eggshell flour will help you to avoid this unpleasant disease. Grind the clean shell with a coffee grinder, and then powder the plant and soil in containers with seedlings. Thus, we will protect from disease and feed the plants.
Thirdly, due to its composition (about 95% - calcium, the rest - magnesium, phosphates and organic substances), it is an excellent addition to any mineral and organic fertilizers, helping to significantly increase the yield.
By the way, you can water plants with an infusion from the shells, such an infusion is especially good for peppers, tomatoes, cauliflower. These plants will appreciate this kind of care. I will tell you how to prepare the infusion in the next paragraph.
How can eggshells be used?
Infusion for watering. It is not difficult to prepare, but it takes quite a long time, 6-7 days. We take water, for a ten-liter bucket of water we need 65-70 shells. The shells should be washed, dried and powdered with a coffee grinder. Pour the resulting "flour" into a bucket of water, mix everything thoroughly and leave for a week.
Stir the liquid periodically well. After 6-7 days, you can start watering, pour 1.5-2 liters of infusion under each bush. But, to be honest, I pour it "by eye" without measuring out the exact amount. I repeat the procedure every two to three weeks.
Seedling container. Yes, you can grow seedlings in egg shells. To do this, the eggs need not be broken in the middle, but carefully opened from above so that the main part of the shell remains intact. Then wash well from the remaining eggs and dry. Pour soil into it (you can buy it, you can - garden, mixed with peat or humus), put the seeds (one seed in a shell) and lightly sprinkle it with earth. Place the shells in the egg holder. Then, when you need to transplant the seedlings into open ground or into large containers, it will be enough just to crush the shell and plant it along with the crushed shell.
Fertilizing and reducing the acidity of the site. Eggshells are also an excellent fertilizer, which also helps to reduce the acidity of the area. As a fertilizer, it can be used in an infusion (preparation is described above), put in compost pits, or simply grind and mix with compost immediately before adding the latter to the soil.
Important
For all of the above, you need a shell from raw eggs, not from boiled ones. There will be little use from the shell of boiled eggs. And be sure to thoroughly wash out the remains of the egg to prevent the development of putrefactive bacteria.
Thus, at the lowest cost, you can get the maximum benefit. The main thing is not to forget and not be lazy to use the shells.
