Godetia is one of the sweetest garden flowers, a bit like a capricious azalea. However, the requirements for the care of godetia are much less. The plant was named in honor of the famous Swiss botanist Ts. H. Gode and was brought to us from Southern California. Now it is a flower beloved by many gardeners - bright, charming and unpretentious
Has a rich color gamut
From the middle of the 19th century, godetia began to be actively cultivated throughout the planet. It is a herbaceous, annual, very bushy plant belonging to the Cyprus family. Its stems are straight, the leaves are linear-lanceolate, alternate. There are short, medium and tall godets. The first and the second are more popular.
Many godetia flowers are often confused with azalea. They are very large, reaching 10 centimeters in diameter, four-lobed in the shape of a cup or bell. Their colors can be varied: from dark red to white. The godetia fruit is a tetrahedral, cylindrical box with small seeds. Seeds remain viable for up to four years.
Today there are more than 20 types of godetia. In addition, a huge number of its hybrid species have been bred: azalea, terry, dwarf, bushy and many other varieties. The plant tolerates temperature changes very well and pleases with its flowering until frost.
Popular hybrids
When choosing plant seeds, it is important to pay attention to their appearance. They must be small, grayish-brown, angular with a slightly rough surface. There should not be any shine on them. Among all varieties of godetia, hybrids of large-flowered godetia (Godetia grandiflora) with beautiful pink flowers, or, for example, pleasant godetia (Godetia amoena) with double pink flowers, are most suitable for planting in the garden.
Florists also recommend varieties such as Crystal Snowflake, Sybil Sherwood, Orange Rume, Blitzstral, Rembrandt, Weiser Schwann and Monarch.
Seeds or seedlings?
Godetia is best planted by seed or seedling. Moreover, the first method is more common. The best time to land in the ground is April. Although in the southern regions, the plant is often planted before winter.
Garden soil is best suited as a soil. But, of course, it is better if it is loamy with a slightly acidic or neutral pH, and preferably on the sunny side. The planting depth of seeds should be no more than 0.5 cm. If you need godetia to sprout in a week, then cover the bed with foil after sowing. This will allow young seedlings to become more frost-resistant. After three leaves appear on them, the seedlings can be thinned out, carefully planting at a distance of at least 20 centimeters.
On plants planted before winter, flowers will appear in June, and in early spring in July. Flowering lasts about two months, often before the first frost. Each of the flowers pleases the eye for about 4 days, and then wither. In order to prolong flowering, it is necessary to promptly remove wilted ovaries and flowers.
When growing godetia seedlings, the seeds must be planted at the end of March. In this case, seedlings will appear in 10 days. The soil must be prepared from peat, sand and sod land, and the seedlings must be fed with mineral fertilizers at least twice a month. Seedlings dive most often in early June into open ground, so as not to damage the root system.
Minimal care needed
Godetia is an unpretentious garden plant. This plant requires minimal care: loosening, watering and fertilizing with mineral fertilizers. Tall varieties are tied to supports, and small ones are thinned out as necessary.
Godetia tolerates cold well, but at the same time, she loves well-lit, warm places. The plant needs moderate, timely watering. Godetia feels comfortable both outdoors and indoors. Oversporosis and rust are dangerous for godetia.
Good for balconies and flower beds
Godezia has long won the love of many flower growers. It pleases with its long and abundant flowering. This plant is planted not only in flower beds, but also in group plantings, flowerpots and balconies. In order for the flowerbed to look neat, you need to sow godetia of the same variety and height. On the balconies, you can most often find dwarf godetia varieties. They are quite bushy and are well suited as a living curb, for a garden path or flower bed. Its flowers stand in a vase for a long time and do not crumble. Tall plant varieties are selected for cutting.
