Among the ubiquitous plants of the Asteraceae family, everyone can choose from a dozen or more to their liking and taste. The diversity of representatives does not prevent them from belonging to the same family, a distinctive feature of which is the inflorescence-basket

Flower petals

To better imagine which plants belong to the Compositae family, you can recall the second name of the family, which immediately draws the desired picture. Otherwise, the family is called "Astrovye".

It immediately becomes clear that we are not talking about baskets woven from willow twigs, with which they go to the forest for mushrooms, but about beautiful complex inflorescences, consisting, as a rule, of two types of flowers. In the center of the inflorescence are tubular flowers, and along the edge there are numerous reed flowers, which we usually call "petals".

Coltsfoot

We have talked about this plant more than once, because it has so many different advantages.

Firstly, it is a very brave plant that appears one of the first after the cold winter, which inhibits the development of vegetation. Its complex inflorescences appear before the leaves. The bright yellow inflorescence consists of bisexual tubular flowers closely pressed together in the center, and numerous ligulate female flowers along the edge.

Secondly, he has amazing leaves with different side temperatures, for which the plant received the name, consisting of two incompatible words.

Thirdly, Mother-and-stepmother has healing abilities, and therefore people treat the plant with respect and sympathy.

Burdock or Burdock

This plant is known to everyone who has walked in nature at least once in his life, be it a wild forest or a well-groomed city park. After all, its complex inflorescences-baskets, formed by bisexual tubular flowers, are protected by a wrapping of pointed leaves with tenacious hooks at the end.

These hooks protect the ripening inflorescence from potential enemies, and help the ripe inflorescence to transport seeds to a new place of residence, clinging to the wool of passing animals or clothing and human hair. Getting rid of annoying fellow travelers is not so easy.

An attentive person, once again freeing his dog after a walk from tenacious hooks, invented Velcro fasteners that simplified the life of children who did not like to lace up their shoes for a long time and tediously.

Dandelion

It is not difficult to guess that Dandelion also belongs to the Asteraceae family, because its inflorescence is so similar to the inflorescence of the Mother-and-Stepmother plant that some people manage to confuse them.

Although, if you take a closer look at these two plants, then with a passing similarity, they have much more differences than similarities. But we've talked about this before.

As for the inflorescence-basket, then in a dandelion it is formed from numerous reed flowers of bright yellow color, generously sharing honey nectar with bees.

Sagebrush

Long flower tassels of Wormwood, the inspirer of poetesses who complain about the bitterness of love, so similar to the bitterness of wormwood, at first glance do not seem at all like baskets that distinguish plants of the Astrov family. But, looking closely at the brush, you will find that it is formed by small heads of inflorescence-baskets of scanty tubular flowers. The thinnest flowers of one inflorescence are bisexual and are protected from the vicissitudes of fate by tiled dragging.

Looking at the inflorescences of Wormwood, once again marvel at the virtuosity of natural creativity and remember the lines of Anastasia Tsvetaeva, ready to go into the fire for a loved one, and instead: “I will breathe in wormwood, Glotnu - wormwood, Bitterness - my mouth is full. At least for a minute the wormwood whirlpool will sink from the heart! …”.

But wormwood, like love, is not always bitter and deprives of appetite. On the contrary, a popular spice, Tarragon wormwood (Tarragon) increases appetite by increasing the amount of gastric juice.

Summary

The list of representatives of the Asteraceae family, decorating nature with their inflorescences-baskets, can be continued for a long time, because this is the most numerous family of plants of the dicotyledonous class.
