Despite the fact that aster is an annual, it is one of the most common crops that are grown on their backyards. There are many varieties of flowers, different shapes of inflorescences, color of petals, height of the bush. And they are suitable for open field propagation, in boxes on balconies and terraces, and as a pot culture. And sowing seeds in the open field can be carried out in late autumn and even in winter

Choosing a site for an aster

When choosing a site for a flower bed, it must be borne in mind that asters love sunlight, so the site should be open. This flower is undemanding to the soil, but grows best on light loam, fertile sandy loam soils.

With regard to acidity, the reaction should be neutral. It is also possible to sow on slightly alkaline soils, where the pH level does not go beyond 6, 5-8, 0. When the acidity is below 6, asters are sown only after liming the soil. To increase the level by one, by 1 square meter. carbon dioxide is added to the area:

• 350 g - on light soils;

• 400 g - for heavy ones.

An important requirement for a landing site is that the land here must be well drained. In conditions of stagnant water, the flower is affected by a fungal infection. With the development of fusarium, your annual may die without fully blooming. In addition to stagnant water aster, waterlogging and high groundwater levels are harmful.

A site for a flower bed with an aster must be prepared for planting in advance. Flowers need fertile soil, but it is better not to plant in the year of organic fertilization. In the process of deep digging in the fall, the soil is filled with peat-manure compost. It will need about 3 kg per 1 square meter. For spring digging, the site is fertilized with nitrophos.

Features of sowing asters in open ground

In the middle lane, asters can be propagated by sowing seeds and growing seedlings. It should be borne in mind that when sowing in open ground, your asters will bloom in late autumn.

Sowing in open ground can be done in three periods:

• before winter in the second half of November, as soon as stable negative temperatures come;

• from December to February on frozen ground in grooves prepared in autumn;

• in early spring.

Unlike flowers that have been propagated through seedlings, soil-sown asters rarely yield new seed. This is due to their later flowering period. At the same time, they have their own advantages: from seeds stratified in natural conditions during the winter, more resistant plants to diseases and pests emerge. In addition, they will delight with a longer flowering period - about a month.

To calculate the moment of flowering, you need to take into account that it takes about 4 months from the day of sowing to the moment of blooming. The duration of flowering also depends on the selected variety - it can last from 45 to 60 days. When the gardener expects to get a flowering flower bed at an earlier date, from July to August, with the arrival of spring, sowing seeds for seedlings should be carried out in greenhouse conditions.

Features of growing asters through seedlings

We must not forget that aster seeds lose their germination very quickly. Experienced growers recommend using the seeds of the last collection. Already two-year-old seeds do not give excellent results. In order to use such seed effectively, it is used when growing seedlings.

Seeds for seedlings are sown in boxes with a nutrient substrate under film or glass at the end of March. The soil mixture is made up of:

• turf land - 3 parts:

• sand - 1 part.

It is useful to add leaf humus or peat to this substrate.
