Under the word "clematis" many people think of a lush liana with large inflorescences of a simple and terry look. But among these plants there are bushy, undersized forms that differ from their counterparts. Today I want to tell you about clematis whole-leafed. Most of the varieties are grouped into the Integrifolia group
Botanical description
Perennial herbaceous plant. In winter, the branches dry out completely, and in spring they grow back. A feature of this group of clematis is the presence of a short erect stem. Depending on the variety, its length ranges from 30 to 1.5 meters. Lack of antennae (there is no way to catch on to the support).
The roots are fibrous, like a long cord. Adult bushes look like small balls. Taller specimens require a circular support.
Leaves are whole, pubescent, oval, with a pointed end, matte. They are attached in pairs to the base. During the growth of the shoots in the spring, they resemble the structure of a "matryoshka". A pair of leaves emerges from the point of growth, then another one. The disclosure of the plates hidden inside continues until the turn of the bud comes up. In this way, the plants have adapted to escape from recurrent frosts, preserving all the most valuable inside the cone.
Mostly small inflorescences from 3 to 8 cm, bell-shaped. Up to 7 pieces on one hand. Their structure is simple: 4-5 petals, many yellowish stamens. Blossom throughout the summer, starting in mid-June on the shoots of this year.
After fertilization, crests with many seeds are formed, ripening by the end of September. They belong to the 3rd group of cropping.
Fashionable varieties
If in the wild there are mainly plants with blue inflorescences, then in the gardens the variety of colors knows no bounds. Here are a few varieties with the most beautiful shapes.
Memory of the heart
The height of the bush is 1-1.5 meters. Shoots are brownish-red. A three-year-old plant forms up to 40 branches, each with the same number of buds. The flowers are bell-shaped drooping, single or triple, lilac in diameter and up to 10 cm long. The petals are strongly ribbed with a satin coating. The stamens are pale yellow. Blossom from June to September. In England at the end of the nineties of the last century, at the exhibition, he entered the top ten world-class varieties.
Alyonushka
The height of the shrub reaches 1.5 m. Up to 50 shoots are formed per year. Inflorescences are single or trifoliate. They look like drooping bells 6-8 cm in diameter and the same length. Lilac-pink with edges bent to the outside. During the heat, with insufficient watering, the color of the flowers fades slightly. The stamens are bright yellow. There are about 30 buds on each shoot. Flowering is long all summer. It is resistant to fungal diseases.
Arabella
The height of the semi-shrub is up to 1, 8 m. Forms semi-herbaceous shoots with leathery simple leaves. The diameter of blue inflorescences with a light stripe in the center of each petal is 10 cm. It has a squeezing effect during rainy periods. The number of petals varies from 4 to 8. The bush is up to 1 meter wide. Without support, it acts as a ground cover plant. Flowering lasts from June to October.
Hakuri
The smallest variety of Japanese selection. Its height does not exceed 50 cm. White inflorescences with a light bluish shade with a diameter of 4-5 cm are similar to Chinese porcelain houses. They seem fragile and graceful. Closer to autumn, the blueness disappears, the buds become pure white. Shoots are slightly sinuous. At the age of three, the diameter of the bush is 0.8 meters. Blooms from mid-June to late September.
Hanayama
The height of the bush does not exceed 70 cm. The narrow, richly crimson petals twisted at the ends form inflorescences with a diameter of 4 cm. In hot weather, in the open sun, they slightly fade to a light pink hue. The bush grows slowly. Blooms continuously from early July to late September.
Baby Rose
A semi-shrub 0.6-0.8 m high. Bright pink petals with dark longitudinal veins, joining in 4 pieces, form inflorescences 5-6 cm in diameter. A lot of rich yellow stamens give a special charm to the buds. Flowering lasts from mid-summer to October.
Breeding clematis does not stand still. Every year new varieties and hybrids of the Integrifolia group appear. Small in stature with erect stems, they will take leading places in your flower beds. Will become a "highlight" of garden compositions.
