Bright, juicy and healthy carrots grow in literally every vegetable garden. In this regard, every summer resident should know about what pests can attack this valuable crop, because root crops affected by various garden parasites become unfit for human consumption and lose their excellent taste. And in order to react in time to the appearance of pests on the site, you need to know the enemy by sight
Carrot fly
It is the most common pest in crunchy root vegetables. The carrot fly is a black insect reaching a length of 5 mm with a round yellow head.
Appearing in May from tiny pupae, the pests lay eggs almost immediately near the growing carrots. And a week later, thin, yellowish larvae hatching from eggs make their way to the roots of plants and gnaw rather deep passages in them, often reaching the cores. The emerging roots begin to taste bitter, crack and take on an ugly shape. And sometimes isolated black depressions can form on their surface. The misadventures of the carrots do not end there - closer to the end of summer, a second generation of no less harmful larvae appears.
Winter scoop
Caterpillars of this pest, gnawing leaves at the very bases, can quickly lead to the death of juicy root crops. In addition, the winter scoop will not refuse to nibble root crops, which in turn leads to a noticeable deterioration in their taste.
White caterpillars of winter scoops, growing up to 50 mm in length, overwinter underground at a depth of about twenty-five centimeters. Approximately by mid-spring, they pupate, and at the very beginning of summer one can observe the appearance of gray butterflies, whose wingspan in most cases reaches 45 mm. One single winter scoop is capable of producing up to two thousand caterpillars per season.
Carrot lily
If these villains populate carrot crops too much, you can easily lose the entire crop. The carrot flap is a miniature jumping insect of light green color, growing up to 2.5 mm in length. Females lay tiny yellow eggs on young tops, and after four weeks, rather active larvae, painted in greenish-yellowish tones, appear from them. Especially unpleasant is the fact that the carrot flask harms carrots in all phases of its development. Harmful insects suck the juices from the leaves, which inevitably leads to deformation of the growing tops (most often it begins to curl), and if the roots grow, they will be hard, tasteless and rather small.
Naked slugs
Carrots and naked slugs are no less harmful, however, they harm mainly young carrot seedlings - eating into growing root crops, they make rather large depressions in them. The sizes of naked slugs depend on their species and can vary from three to seven centimeters. Each adult individual lays up to half a thousand eggs at a time, while the egg-laying period covers the entire summer and the entire autumn season. And juveniles hatching from eggs reach full maturity in a week.
Naked slugs are very partial to high humidity and are especially active in wet weather or at night. And with the establishment of hot and rather dry weather, their number in the areas decreases significantly.
Carrot moth
The years of these pests starts in the second half of June. Females immediately begin to lay eggs on the buds and pedicels of the inflorescences, and in July caterpillars appear, eating almost all parts of the plants. After some time, they transform into pupae, and closer to the end of summer, harmful butterflies can be seen on the site.
Medvedka
This large insect, which often reaches five centimeters in size, is endowed with very powerful jaws and an incredibly strong shell. Bears gnaw through carrot stalks and roots without much difficulty. The larvae of the bear, which gradually destroy carrot crops, are no less harmful.
