family Astrovye (lat. Asteraceae), or Compositae (lat. What's in your name
If the Latin name of the genus "Carduus" is associated with an ancient name, the roots of which are lost in ancient times, when all thorny plants were called a consonant word, then the specific epithet "crispus" was assigned by botanists to this species of the genus for the curly appearance of the leaves of the plant. From the Latin language, the word "crispus" is literally translated into Russian by the word "curly".
Description
Curly thistle is a herbaceous plant with a two-year growing cycle. From its fusiform rhizome with numerous adventitious roots, a picturesque rosette of curly thorny leaves is born on the surface of the earth. In the second year of life, a rounded, grooved, erect stem rises at a rapid pace from last year's outlet, depending on living conditions, growing in height from 0.9 to two meters. The top of the stem is slightly branched.
Sessile, picturesque, lanceolate or ovate leaves, lobed or notched-toothed, with spiny spines along the edge of the leaf plate, are arranged in the next order on the stem. The underside of the leaf plate is gray tomentose from hairs. There may be scattered short hairs on the upper side of the leaf plate. The lower leaves of the plant have short petioles.
Peduncles from the leaves running down them seem to be winged natural creatures. On each peduncle there are three to four small inflorescences-baskets. The protective wrap of the basket is folded with linear subulate leaves covered with cobweb hairs, with a short tip. The leaves of the envelope can be bent downward, or protruding to the side. Tubular hermaphrodite flowers, usually white, less often red, lilac or violet, are located under the protection of a rigid envelope.
The vegetation cycle results in finely furrowed achenes with a length of three to four millimeters with a hairy crest for flight.
Usage
Curly thistle grows everywhere in our country. The plant feels great both in places open to the sun and in partial shade. In the wild, it can be found in forest glades, in thickets of bushes, along river banks, on the sides of dirt roads, near settlements, in man-made gardens and vegetable gardens. The endurance and vitality of the curly thistle makes the plant an annoying and harmful weed that is not easy to control.
However, for beekeepers, curly thistle is a valuable plant, since the nectar of its tubular flowers attracts bees, who process it into healing honey.
The achenes of Curly Thistle contain a fatty oil that can help people with liver problems. Scientists have found that extracts of Thistle curly have anti-cancer properties. The roots of the plant are used by traditional healers as a strengthening and soothing agent. However, it must be remembered that the roots contain toxic substances, so care must be taken.
In principle, the young leaves of a plant can be eaten cooked if there is no plant alternative available.
