Hyssop medicinal (Latin Hyssopus officinalis) - one of the most common representatives of the genus Hyssopus of the Lamb family. Naturally grows in Europe, Asia and Africa. Prefers sunny areas.

Characteristics of culture

Hyssop officinalis is represented by branched shrubs, reaching a height of up to 80 cm. It is characterized by a taproot, woody root, pubescent or bare tetrahedral stems, which are lignified at the base. The foliage is opposite, lanceolate, sessile, has edges wrapped inward.

Inflorescences consist of false whorls in the amount of 3-7 pieces, the shape is oblong, spike-shaped. The calyx has a light green color, a purple tint is possible from one side. The corolla, in turn, is endowed with a blue or purple color; there are also white and pink corollas.

Fruits are fractional (otherwise coenobium), formed from 4 triangular-ovoid brown nuts. The flowering of hyssop officinalis occurs in mid-summer - early autumn. The fruits begin to ripen in early August.

Plant use

Hyssop medicinal boasts a high content of essential oil, flavonoids, tannins, ascorbic acid, issporin, etc. Interestingly, the largest amount of essential oil is formed in plants with blue flowers, but with white flowers it is the least.

Hyssop officinalis is often used in food. It has a pleasant ginger aroma with hints of sage. The taste is slightly bitter, but quite pleasant. Hyssop is suitable for flavoring both cold appetizers and soups, main courses. Especially well hyssop sets off the taste of beef, veal, fish, vegetables, including potatoes.

Hyssop won its recognition in folk medicine. By the way, in some countries, the plant has long been used in official medicine. Hyssop is advised to be taken to improve the functioning of the digestive tract, treat bronchitis, increased sweating, anemia and constipation. Excellent hyssop helps with dry cough, neurosis, rheumatism.

Also, medicinal hyssop has proven itself in the treatment of purulent wounds, because it is an excellent antiseptic. He is also advised for rinsing the mouth with stomatitis. Folk healers recommend decoction compresses to be applied to bruises and wounds.
