Description
Small-flowered raspberry is a perennial shrub, the height of which ranges from two and a half to three meters.
The leaves of this plant are velvety to the touch and rather large - their diameter often reaches twenty centimeters. And the edges of the leaves are always uneven. In summer, they boast a juicy bright green color, and with the onset of the fall season, they are painted in delicious bright red and bright yellow tones.
Small-flowered raspberry flowers are also not small - their diameter varies from two to six centimeters. And the color of the flowers can be either creamy or white. By the way, among all plants belonging to the genus Raspberry, small-flowered raspberries have the largest flowers!
The edible berries of this culture boast a wonderful aroma and a rather tart taste. The color of the berries is usually bright red, and their ripening occurs in the middle of summer.
Where grows
Under natural conditions, small-flowered raspberry grows in North America: from Alaska to Mexico. By the way, in the North American forests, black bears are very fond of eating it. Do not refuse fragrant berries and foxes, squirrels, chipmunks, skunks, coyotes and even birds. Moreover, many birds (especially blackbirds, partridges and black grouse) often wind their nests in the thickets of small-flowered raspberries.
Application
Local residents of the North American continent harvest not only the berries of small-flowered raspberries, but also some of its other parts: shoots, roots and leaves, which subsequently act as a medicine. And the fruits can be eaten both fresh and dried - dried berries also practically do not lose their beneficial properties.
The juicy berries of small-flowered raspberries make an excellent filling for pies, and they also make jam, compotes and jelly. You can add these berries to soups or salads, in addition, they make delicious jelly. And wines with infusions of small-flowered raspberries are also excellent.
Powdered dried leaves are used as dressings for ulcers and burns, and young shoots are sometimes cooked in the same way as asparagus - in terms of their nutritional value, they are absolutely not inferior to the most useful vegetables.
The berries and leaves of the plant, which are very rich in ascorbic acid, are an excellent antiscorbutic agent. And they also have pronounced antioxidant properties, which makes them an excellent fortifying agent and allows them to be recommended in the recovery period after surgery, injury or serious illness. At the same time, it is important not to forget that heat treatment almost completely destroys ascorbic acid, respectively, it is best to freeze the berries.
Contraindications
Small-flowered raspberries pose absolutely no danger to either adults or children. True, in the case of individual intolerance, it is still impossible to completely exclude allergic reactions.
Growing and caring
Best of all, small-flowered raspberries will grow in clearings, as well as in forest glades and forest edges. It is undemanding to soils - even on stony and barren areas, this plant will still feel good. But this culture is very partial to good hydration.
Small-flowered raspberries boast truly impressive frost resistance, and their reproduction occurs by root suckers. At the same time, it grows very aggressively throughout the territory suitable for its existence, displacing all other plants.
