Fortune's euonymus (lat. Euonymus fortunei) - a representative of the genus euonymus of the euonymus family. China is considered to be the homeland of the plant.

Forchun's euonymus is a cushion-shaped creeping shrub, the height of which varies from 30 cm to 2 m. The leaves are evergreen, leathery, shiny, elliptical or oval in shape. Fortune's euonymus is frost-resistant. It blooms extremely rarely, especially in regions with a cold climate. As the shrubs grow, they form a beautiful dense carpet, it is not forbidden to grow a crop on a support. Unpretentious, often used in ornamental gardening.
Varieties
* Vegetus - the variety is represented by undersized shrubs with dark green, matte, ovoid leaves, the veins and edges of which are painted in white. Boasts fast growth. Forms lush carpets. Easily overcomes any obstacles, can climb rocks, bushes and trees.
* Minimus - the variety is represented by miniature bushes with whole-edged elliptical leaves and thin filamentous shoots. Frost-resistant and unpretentious.
* Emerald Gold - the variety is represented by compact, slow-growing bushes up to 30 cm high. The leaves are emerald, with golden or yellow edging, sharp, up to 2 cm long. In autumn, the foliage acquires an unusually bright reddish-brown color.
* Emerald Gaiety - the variety is represented by compact bushes up to 20 cm high. It has ovoid, uneven leaves with a white border. Average frost resistance. It is widely used in landscaping gardens, parks and personal backyards.
* Silver Queen - the variety is represented by voluminous, strongly growing bushes with bright green leaves with a white edging. With the onset of cold weather, the edging of the leaves acquires a pinkish tint.
* SunSpot - the variety is represented by dense, undersized shrubs. The leaves are ovate, equipped with a bright golden elliptical speck located along the axial vein. Frost resistant.
Growing conditions
Fortune's eonymus develops well in sunny and semi-shaded areas. In the dense shade, the plants acquire a faded appearance, are often exposed to various diseases and illnesses. Soils are preferable fresh, loamy, moderately moist, acidic or alkaline. It is not recommended to grow the crop on saline, heavy clayey and waterlogged soils. Wind protection is welcome.
Subtleties of reproduction
Forchun's euonymus is propagated by seeds, green cuttings, root suckers and dividing the bush. The seed method is difficult. Seeds need stratification. When sowing without this procedure, seedlings appear only in the second year.
Stratification is carried out in two stages: first, the seeds are mixed with coarse sand (1: 2) and kept for 3-4 months at a temperature of 10-12C; the second - 4-5 months at a temperature of 0C. Before planting, the seeds are treated with a weak solution of potassium permanganate. Prepared seeds are sown into grooves with a depth of 1, 5-2 cm. Entrances appear in 20-25 days.
Cutting is the most common and effective method. Cuttings are cut in June-July from young elastic shoots. Each stalk must have one internode. Cuttings are planted under a film shelter or in a greenhouse before rooting. After 1, 5-2 months, the rooted cuttings are planted in a permanent place. For the winter, the still immature material is mulched with a thick layer of peat or dry fallen leaves.
Care
In the first year, the plants require more thorough care. Young euonymus are regularly watered and fed with mullein liquid solution. Mulching the soil is encouraged. Peat chips can be used as mulch. For the winter, the plants are covered with spruce branches. In subsequent years, pruning is also added to the main procedures. The culture is responsive to soil aeration. Preventive treatments against pests and diseases are required. Often, euonymus are affected by aphids and apple moths.
Usage
Many varieties of Fortune's euonymus are unusually decorative. They are ideal for solitary and group plantings. They are also suitable for creating hedges. Euonymus are combined with many undersized coniferous and deciduous shrubs. Culture is appropriate in rockeries and other rocky flower beds.
