Characteristics of culture
Wilson's barberry is a low-growing semi-evergreen shrub with ribbed, pubescent brownish-red shoots. Young shoots are slightly yellowish. Leaves are single-edged, sharp or obtuse, lanceolate, dense, matte green or with a bluish bloom. In autumn, the foliage takes on a carmine red color.
The shrubs are equipped with thin tripartite spines, the length of which varies from 0.5 to 2 cm. The flowers are golden-yellow, collected in short paniculate or dense bundle-shaped inflorescences, sitting on long pedicels. Fruits are red or coral, globular. Wilson's barberry blooms in April-May.
Growing conditions
Wilson's barberry is photophilous, it develops most actively in sunny areas with diffused light. Any garden soils with a high content of organic matter and minerals are acceptable. The optimum acidity is 6-7.5. Weakly acidic soils are not forbidden. Strongly acidic soils are subjected to preliminary liming (per 1 sq. M. - 300 g of slaked lime). Good drainage is encouraged.
Reproduction and planting
Propagated by Wilson barberry seeds, green cuttings, root suckers and dividing the bush. Sowing seeds is carried out both in spring and autumn. Autumn sowing is most effective. Freshly harvested barberry fruits are squeezed out, laid out on a sieve and sieved under running water. Dried seeds are sown in prepared grooves 0.5-1 cm deep in open ground. Crops are mulched with a thick layer of fallen leaves, peat or sawdust.
When sowing in spring, the seeds need preliminary stratification, its duration is 2-5 months, the optimum temperature is 2C. Seed germination with proper preparation will reach 90-95%. When sowing in autumn, seedlings appear with the onset of stable heat, with spring sowing - at the beginning of summer. Thinning is carried out in phase 2 of true leaves. The distance between the plants should be 3-5 cm. Young and mature seedlings are transplanted to a permanent place after 2 years.
Wilson's barberry is easily propagated by green cuttings. This procedure is carried out in mid-June. Cuttings are rooted in greenhouses. The transplant is carried out, as well as with the seed propagation method, after 2 years. It is advisable to plant seedlings in spring, the distance between the bushes should be about 1.5-2 m. When planting a hedge, plants are placed at a closer distance from each other (2 seedlings per 1 m).
Care
Regular watering, weeding and loosening are important for the Wilson barberry. It is necessary to feed with complex mineral and organic fertilizers every 3-4 years. Mulching has a beneficial effect on the general condition of plants. On hot days, mulch protects the root system from overheating and also retains moisture for a longer period.
Barberry Wilson needs sanitary and thinning pruning no more often than in 2-3 years. The culture is very often affected by pests and diseases, among them the most common are: barberry aphid, flower moth, rust, powdery mildew, etc. Various herbal infusions, insecticides and other chemical preparations are effective against these problems.
