Delphinium grandiflorum (Latin Delphinium grandiflorum) - a flowering representative of the Delphinium genus of the Buttercup family. Another name is Chinese delphinium (Latin Delphinium chinensis). One of the most common species that are popular among Russian and foreign florists and gardeners. The species under consideration is also found in natural conditions. Typical habitats are bushes, rocky slopes, steppe zones and dry meadows. The distribution area is China, Mongolia (northern regions), Korea, as well as Siberia (eastern regions) and the Far East.

Characteristics of culture

Large-flowered delphinium is represented by perennial herbaceous plants up to 80 cm high (but more often specimens not exceeding 50 cm in height) with a branched straight stem, pubescent over the entire surface with short white hairs and bearing complex, trifoliate, separate, narrow, linear foliage. The flowers of the large-flowered delphinium are saturated blue, white or pink, which depends entirely on the varietal affiliation, and this species has quite a lot of varieties.

The flowers, by the way, are of medium size, wide, collected in racemose inflorescences, which give the plant a special attractiveness and originality. It should be noted the unique feature of the flowers, they are equipped with a perianth, which has obovate or elliptical leaves, reaching a length of 2.5 cm. There are large-flowered delphinium flowers and spurs, they are blunt at the tips, often curved. The fruit is presented in the form of multileafs containing small gray seeds with a white border around the edge.

The flowering culture is observed in mid - late summer. The flowering is bright, abundant, however, in the absence of proper care and an unfavorable climate, it is meager and unsightly. It should be noted that this species is actively used by breeders to obtain new forms and varieties; today both simple and terry forms are presented on the market, the latter are loved by most florists and gardeners.

Popular varieties

Of the varieties of the large-flowered delphinium, or Chinese, the variety called the Pink Butterfly has won special attention. It is characterized by graceful compact plants 30-40 cm high with light pink flowers no more than 3-3.5 cm in diameter, collected in loose racemose inflorescences. The Blue Butterfly variety is no less interesting. It boasts pyramidal inflorescences bearing bright blue flowers up to 3.5 cm in diameter, blooming in early summer and delighting with their beauty until August. This variety is actively used for decorating a rabatka, it is also suitable for creating bouquets.

Another variety that cannot be ignored is the White Butterfly. Its distinctive feature is small white flowers collected in few-flowered brushes. This variety is used to decorate mixborders in the middle ground. Also in Russian gardens you can find the Blue Dwarf variety (Blauer Zwerg). It is characterized by blue flowers that bloom in early summer. You can also find harmonious mixtures of large-flowered delphinium on sale, for example, Butterfly Mix. This mixture produces short plants bearing blue, pink, blue and even white flowers.

Growing features

Large-flowered delphinium should be grown in sunny or semi-shaded areas, protected from cold and squally winds that can break plant stems. The soils are preferably drained, loamy or sandy loam, nutritious, moderately moist, without compaction, with a neutral pH reaction. Cultivation on acidic soils is possible, but in this case, liming is carried out beforehand.

A similar situation is with poor soils, if they are well nourished, they will be suitable for growing such an unusual crop. It is not recommended to plant plants in swampy and saline areas, as well as areas where there is a lack of light, a thick shadow is destructive for all representatives of the delphinium genus. Otherwise, the species is unpretentious, and caring for it consists of standard procedures - watering, weeding, loosening and combating pests and diseases.
