Weigela garden (lat. Weigela hortensis) - ornamental shrub; a representative of the Weigela genus of the Honeysuckle family. Naturally grows in deciduous forests of Japan. Outwardly, the appearance is very similar to the weigela Korean, it differs only in the color of the flowers and more abundant flowering.
Characteristics of culture
Weigela garden is a deciduous shrub up to 1-1, 2 m high (in nature up to 3 m) with a loose, spreading-rounded crown and thin pubescent shoots. The leaves are bright green, almost glabrous above and densely pubescent below, oblong-ovate, obovate or ovate-elliptical, serrate along the edge, with a wide-wedge-shaped or rounded base, pointed tips, up to 10 cm long, sitting on short petioles. In autumn, foliage transforms and becomes ocher, usually in October.
The flowers are pinkish-carmine, collected in 2-3 pieces in umbellate bunches that form on the tops of young twigs, as well as in the axils of the upper leaves on biennial shoots. The flowers are equipped with long pedicels, a tubular-bell-shaped corolla up to 3.5 cm long. The lobes of the corolla are almost equal, narrow, with a limb. Fruits are capsules with narrow-winged seeds. Weigela garden blooms in late May - early June for 25 days. Low winter hardiness, young plants are able to withstand temperatures as low as -18C. Later, winter-hardy properties are enhanced.
It should be noted that the species under consideration is resistant to drought, but abundant flowering can be achieved only with regular moisture. Currently, weigela garden has one form, which is distinguished by white flowers (f. Albiflora). The species can be planted both singly and in groups on the lawn, under the canopy of trees with an openwork crown that does not allow shading, as well as in well-lit areas. Also, weigela garden is suitable for creating an alpine slide, rockery and other types of rocky flower beds. Shrubs will look especially good in Japanese-style gardens.
Growing in the garden
Weigela garden is a demanding species for growing conditions and care. In shady areas, plants will feel defective. They need diffused sunlight. Leaves and flowers are very sensitive to winds, so shrubs need to be protected from strong gusts, for example by planting a crop near a well-lit side of the house or against a backdrop of tall trees and shrubs. Soils for growing garden weigela are preferred rich, loose, fresh. To fill the planting pits, a mixture consisting of leafy earth or humus, turf soil and washed river sand in a ratio of 2: 1: 2 is optimal. Will not tolerate waterlogging, salinization and waterlogging. Strongly acidic soils are also undesirable; before planting, they are limestone with dolomite flour or lime. Negatively, weigela garden refers to heavy clay and compacted soils, but this problem can be easily solved with the help of a 20-centimeter drainage layer, which can be broken brick or coarse sand.
The planting method is similar to all other species. Pit dimensions - 50 * 50 cm + drainage layer; distance between plants - from 1, 5 to 3 m; the root collar is left at ground level or a couple of centimeters higher. Standard care: watering 1-2 times a month, 8-10 liters per bush, regular loosening to a depth of 5 cm, weeding, fertilization (2-3 times per season - in early spring with urea, superphosphate, potassium fertilizers; in the budding phase double superphosphate and potassium sulfate; after pruning with complex mineral fertilizers). Sanitary and formative pruning is also important (the first is carried out in the spring, the second after flowering). Mulching is encouraged. Shelter for the winter is a must. Spruce branches or lutrasil are used as an insulating material. It is impossible to tilt the bushes to the soil, otherwise fragile shoots may break, it is better to erect a wire frame over the bushes.
Pest control
With proper care and favorable growing conditions, the garden weigel is practically not affected by pests and diseases. In rare cases, leaf-eating insects and aphids settle on plants. This usually occurs when the weather is hot and dry. It is extremely important to prevent damage, for this the bushes are sprayed with Bordeaux liquid or infusion of garlic and tobacco with an interval of 14-15 days. During planting of seedlings in the pit, you can inadvertently bring in the larvae of the May beetle and the bear, it is not difficult to recognize the appearance of insects: the bushes begin to turn yellow and wither. Therefore, before adding compost or humus to the planting pit, it is necessary to carefully examine it for the presence of various animals. If the defeat could not be avoided, the soil is treated with actara, karbofos or medvetox.
