Experienced gardeners know that toads and frogs are useful in the garden and in the garden in that they eat almost everything that moves. The vision of these amphibians is unique, they can only see moving objects. Therefore, by destroying harmful insects, frogs bring tremendous help to the garden. Toads will never feast on strawberries, as gardeners sometimes think. The berry is eaten by slugs, but toads hunt them, waiting for them in the thickets. Toads hunt more often at night or on a cloudy day, when pests of agricultural crops are wielding
The largest tailless amphibians are toads. There are six types of toads on the territory of Russia, the more common ones are the green toad and the common gray toad. The gray toad is larger than the green one, cold-loving, and is found in the steppe and forest zones. The largest gray toads live in the foothill, mountain forests of the Caucasus, lowlands, make their way into gardens and vegetable gardens, settling in the same territory with a person.
These slippery and cold animals are often afraid and disdainful of them. There are times that people destroy toads because of a bias towards them. Such actions are fundamentally wrong. Try using all possible methods to preserve and breed frogs on your land. In the matter of crop protection, this is an important task, therefore amphibians require attention and respect.
Conditions for the life of toads in the garden
If there are water bodies on your garden plot, then this will contribute to the survival and birth of offspring of frogs and toads. Favorable conditions for the existence of amphibians play a leading role in the fight against pests of garden crops. For the life of amphibians, the most common decorative pond, arranged in a low-lying area of the site, is suitable. Please note that such a pond should not freeze to the bottom in winter, it should be deep enough. Born and raised frogs on your pond will carefully protect the surrounding area, eating mosquitoes and harmful insects.
If there is no pond in the garden, create an artificial, small pond using an old basin or bath. To make it easier for the frogs to get out of the water, place wooden planks along the edges of the water. Maintaining the conditions for the life of toads, build them a "house" of twigs, pieces of wood. To create a comfortable habitat for amphibians, do not pull up the grass in secluded areas of the garden.
The benefits of toads and frogs
Why use chemical agents to combat harmful insects if the well-known toads and frogs help to solve this problem? One adult toad benefits as much as two tits, clearing pests and preserving agricultural produce. The advantage of frogs over birds is that they destroy invertebrates with an unpleasant odor, with a protective coloration, which sometimes birds do not eat. When most carnivorous birds are asleep, frogs lead an active lifestyle, destroying nocturnal pests. At night, moths, caterpillars, slugs are especially active - they gnaw crops and infect them with diseases. Frogs are able to actively protect strawberries and tomatoes from slug infestation.
In addition, toads destroy hated bears, wireworms, flying insects and the Colorado potato beetle with its larvae. The young generation of frogs in their diet include weevils, mosquitoes, aphids.
Reproduction and habits of toads
Reproduction of toads occurs only in the presence of water: ditches, ponds, puddles. If you have a body of water in your garden, then there is a high probability of finding slimy lumps of frog eggs in the spring. After a few days, tiny tadpoles emerge from the eggs, turning into small copies of adult frogs as they develop.
Toads reproduce in a slightly different way. At the bottom of water bodies or on water stems of plants, you can see roe cords. Tadpoles emerging from eggs attach to bottom objects or underwater vegetation. Eating algae, rotting parts of plants and animals, they purify the reservoir. Outwardly, it is quite possible to distinguish a frog and a toad by the position of the head. The toad's head is closer to the ground than the frog's. When you hear croaking in your garden, do not frighten or poison toads, they are very useful animals, real protectors of your plants.
