The issue of creating hedges is of interest to many advanced summer residents. Indeed, it is beautiful, rational and prestigious. Choosing a hawthorn, you will receive not only a decorative ornament, but also reliable protection from the penetration of animals and unwanted visitors. Consider planting, grooming and haircutting schemes
A little about hawthorn
The unpretentiousness, frost and drought resistance of hawthorn are appreciated by amateur farmers. This deciduous, multi-stemmed shrub stands out for its decorative qualities. It has many subspecies (more than 1200), differing in the color of the bark, leaves, and the shape of the fruit.
In one place it grows from 50 to 150 years, forming a new growth, capable of reaching 6-8 meters. The main varieties are distinguished by abundant thorns-thorns up to 10 cm. High shoot formation makes the plant an extremely valuable material for pruning and curly haircut (topiary).
For hedges, you can use any variety, however, the most popular are fan-shaped, smooth ordinary, Siberian blood-red, black, monopest.
Why choose hawthorn?
• Density of the crown, rigid branches and thorns create an insurmountable barrier, protect from wind, noise, exhaust gases.
• Durability: with the right care, it will delight several generations of your family.
• Versatility in application: high fences, decorating flower beds and borders, highlighting individual zones, creating niches, trellis walls.
• Undemanding to soil and conditions.
How to plant a hawthorn for a hedge?
The planting process should be planned for early fall or spring. Young seedlings, no higher than 70 cm, adapt well and take root. The preparatory work depends on the scale of your plan. If it is a hedge, accurate marking is required for the trench in the selected area: pegs are driven in, a rope is pulled. A trench of 50x50 cm is dug, for a two-row planting, the width is 1 meter. It is filled with any nutrient mixture, for example: sand, composted humus, peat, turf soil (1: 2: 1: 2).
Seedlings are placed in moistened soil at a distance of 30-50 cm. If a two-row is created, then a checkerboard pattern is used, with an interval between bushes up to 60-70 cm. After backfilling and watering, it is advisable to mulch with sawdust or chips.
For the first year, it is recommended to make holes and provide weekly watering. In the middle of the second summer, you need to feed with nitrogen-containing preparations. In autumn, add potassium and superphosphate.
Trimming and shaping hedges
When creating a hedge, strive to maintain a wall width of no more than 70 cm. This is the optimum density for good functionality. In denser plantings, drying and dying off of the shoots begins. Formative activities are always held in the spring, before the buds open. The first pruning takes place in the second year, it is the most cardinal: all the shoots of the seedling are truncated on a stump, only 10 cm remains from the ground. This method is aimed at developing the root contour, activating dormant buds of "reverse growth", the formation of several trunks and subsequent crown density.
Three years later, when the trunk near the ground reaches a thickness of 1.5-2 cm, a hedge skeleton is formed. The near-stem bud is left, the last year's shoot is truncated by half, the new one is removed by two-thirds. The intended branches for the skeleton do not affect and are allowed to drag arbitrarily throughout the year. After 3-4 years, you will be able to enjoy the results of labor - the original fence strip will appear.
How to care for a hedge?
For the first five years, the seedlings are still weak and need care. The resulting density of roots depletes the soil, to maintain the abundance of green mass, you need to apply nitroammofosk twice a season, during the dry season, do abundant watering 1-2 times a month (at least 5 liters per bush). The shrub reacts well to loosening, the introduction of humus, peat, compost (1: 1: 1). A bucket of such a mixture is enough per square meter. Phosphorus-potassium fertilizers are added during autumn digging.
After reaching the planned height, all activities consist of a cosmetic haircut / plucking. Carried out with electric shears or pruning shears from May to the end of July 2-3 times.
To maintain the ideal horizon, it is recommended to tighten the thread. Irregular haircuts can lead to overgrowth, loss of shape, bald patches and crown exposure.
In the course of work, you need to concentrate on stabilizing the forms: all shoots that go beyond the contour of the hedge are removed. For example, if the selected height corresponds to 1.5 m, and the density is 0.6-0.7, then all haircuts are carried out according to the selected parameters. A truncated trapezoid is considered the ideal shape of a hawthorn wall; rounded shapes are also popular.
