“There is never too much beauty,” says popular wisdom. Acquiring a large amount of planting material at a time is expensive. It is enough to write out one or two copies in order to reproduce Japanese kerria independently in the future. What methods do experienced gardeners use?
Breeding types
Suitable for culture:
• Vegetative methods (layering, cuttings, dividing the bush);
• Seed.
The second option is possible in the southern regions, where the grains have time to mature enough. In this case, there is a division into parental characteristics. Used by breeders to create a new variety.
Layers
The easiest method for novice florists. It is performed in two ways: vertical, horizontal. The operation is carried out before the leaves appear.
In the first option, grooves with a depth of 5-7 cm are dug next to an adult plant in early spring. Shoots are laid in them (no more than 10% of the branches from the volume of the bush). Pin the middle with a wire. The top is taken out, tied to a peg. A groove is poured abundantly with water, sprinkled with earth.
The horizontal method differs in the way a branch is bookmarked. It fits completely into the groove. They pin it, wait for the lateral shoots from the buds to grow back. When the shoots reach 10-14 cm, the groove is abundantly watered. Remove the lower leaves. Sprinkle with loose, fertile soil.
By the end of summer, roots are formed on the stem. The next season in the spring, the daughter plants are cut off from the mother. They are planted in a permanent place.
Cuttings
At the end of June, green cuttings are harvested, cutting the branch into separate parts 7-10 cm long with 2-3 buds. The lower cut is oblique, the upper one is at right angles. The beveled end is dipped in Kornevin powder.
Prepare a bed for seedlings, digging the soil to a depth of 15-18 cm, choosing malicious weeds. Sand is scattered, creating a loose "pillow". Mix it with earth. Rows are cut every 20 cm. Spill with potassium permanganate solution.
The holes are marked with a stick. Cuttings are stuck, deepening the lower bud into the ground at an acute angle. They squeeze the ground. Cover with foil through the arcs. With successful rooting, after a month the seedlings start to grow.
Young plants overwinter in a garden bed under a cover made of non-woven material. In the spring of next year, the bushes are ready for transplanting into open ground.
Dividing the bush
5-6 year old specimens are divided in early spring, before bud break. Dig up the plants completely. Cut into pieces with a knife, leaving 2-3 shoots with good roots in each.
Planted immediately to a permanent place. At first, they monitor the moisture content of the soil, preventing it from drying out.
Root offspring
Kerria is capable of producing minor root suckers. In early spring, the daughter shoots are separated from the mother bush. They are transplanted into a "school" with loose soil. All season, when the soil dries up, watering is carried out.
By the fall, a powerful root system is formed on the seedlings. The following spring, the plants are planted in a flower bed.
Place in the flower garden
Kerria looks great both in group and in solitary plantings. Flexible branches bend to the ground under the weight of flowers, forming powerful cascades. The diameter of one adult plant reaches 1.5 meters. Against the background of a mowed lawn, bright "suns" look especially impressive.
It goes well with ground cover perennials: primroses, ayuga, periwinkle, stonecrop, daisy, crocuses. Serves as an excellent background for geychera, tiarella, brunner, splayed blue phlox, dwarf irises, aquilegia.
Shrubby cinquefoil, purple-leaved hazel, buzulnik with yellow inflorescences will become partners for the "beauty". Experts grow plants in a tub culture. Correct pruning helps to form compact bushes that adorn gazebos, terraces, and recreation areas.
Kerria Japanese during flowering charges with solar energy, pleases the eye with bright colors. Plant her at the front door to admire the yellow terry suns on the branches every day. May she bring happiness and summer warmth to your home!
