A beautiful deciduous shrub of kerria, during flowering, resembles a luxurious bright sun. There are practically no leaves behind the buds. The cascading arrangement of the branches gives the plant a special grace. How to make friends with a Japanese beauty?
Structural features
The root system is fibrous, superficial. The structure of the bush resembles garden raspberries. Rod-shaped thin shoots reach 1, 5-2 meters in the middle lane.
Leaves are lanceolate with deep clear veins. The edge is serrate with notches, sharp at the end, wide at the base. The upper part of the leaf plate is smooth, below it is pubescent. In summer it is bright green, by autumn it turns slightly yellow.
Inflorescences are single or paired, bright yellow, simple or terry, up to 4.5 cm in size. Blossom in May in abundant bunches for a month. In summer, single specimens are found on the branches. In the fall, most varieties bloom again. They have a faint delicate aroma similar to dandelions.
Seeds ripen only in the southern regions. Dark grains are collected in a juicy drupe.
Preferences
In the wild, it grows on forest edges. Loves fertile, loose loamy soil with sufficient moisture. Does not tolerate flooding by groundwater or flood waters.
It blooms more abundantly in sunny places, but the buds quickly fade. It tolerates openwork partial shade next to other shrubs. Thin shoots can suffer from strong winds, so they choose a protected, quiet place for young bushes.
Landing
In early spring or early autumn, holes are dug 40 cm deep and 50 cm in diameter. At the bottom, drainage is made from expanded clay, broken brick or shards of earthenware. Prepare a mixture of humus, sand, compost in a ratio of 2: 1: 2 with the addition of a glass of ash, 40 g of nitroammofoska.
They fill the hole, pouring a mound in the center. Set the seedlings by spreading the roots. Sprinkle with fertile soil. Compaction of the near-trunk zone. Sprinkle abundantly with water. When shrinking, add earth. The root collar is placed flush with the garden bed.
Care
In early spring, they inspect the bushes. Frozen, broken branches are cut off. Kerria is able to quickly restore the lost crown, without prejudice to flowering. They are fed twice: in May with a complex fertilizer Kemira Lux, after flowering with an infusion of a mullein, with the addition of a matchbox of superphosphate, to stimulate the active growth of new shoots.
Water as the top layer of the soil dries up in moderate doses, avoiding stagnation of moisture at the roots. During dry periods, once a week. After moistening, the near-trunk zone is gently loosened, weeds are removed at a young age. Mulching with sawdust, dry grass, peat helps in the fight against "competitors", closes evaporation.
After flowering, dried buds are removed, stimulating the formation of additional flower buds. Young specimens with a small number of shoots need to be tied to a support.
In the middle lane, kerrias have no pests. Proper care allows you to avoid the defeat of fungal diseases.
Wintering
The plant belongs to the 5th zone of winter hardiness. In the middle lane it winters with a shelter. The bushes are bent to the ground in the fall, pinning them with wire. Plants are insulated with non-woven material. Eliminate contact with wet soil by lining a piece of foam under the branches. During cold weather, additional drifts of snow are thrown over.
They remove the shelter in early spring, gradually on a cloudy day, so as not to cause sunburn on the stems. First, the frame is removed, leaving a shelter. After 1-2 weeks, the branches are straightened.
